Mariners making moves acquire speedy Jarrod Dyson

Earlier today the Seattle Mariners acquired Yovani Gallardo from the Baltimore Orioles. Shortly after it was announced the Mariners then acquired outfielder Jarrod Dyson from the Kansas City Royals. In exchange for Dyson the Royals will get pitcher Nate Karns from Seattle.

Dyson hit .278/.340/.388 with 25 RBI and 30 stolen bases in 107 games for the Royals in 2016. Dyson might not be an everyday player, but he has the ability to draw walks and limit strikeouts at the plate. Combined with his speed that makes for a solid leadoff hitter and gives the Mariners more speed which is a must for the team this off-season. The 32-year-old Dyson is eligible for free agency in 2018, but the Mariners get a cheap speedy leadoff hitter for at least one season.

Nate Karns went 6-2 5.15 ERA in 22 games (15 starts) with one save for Seattle in 2016. Karns is 29 years old and is not able to hit free agency until 2021 at the earliest. Struggled last season, but had a strong campaign with the Tampa Bay Rays in 2015. Karns is a guy that can both start in the rotation and pitch out of the bullpen. The Royals are likely trying to find another Danny Duffy type pitcher that can pitch both in the rotation and in the bullpen successfully.
