County Cups Return!

The first round of both the Northumberland FA Benevolent Bowl & Minor Cup produced plenty goals & cup upsets.

7 out of 8 benny bowl games went ahead. With 2 First Division sides represented we had potential banana skins. The first tie didn't have a hope, Alnwick Town despatched FC United Of Newcastle easily 9-1, however Prudhoe Youth Club ran Burradon & New Fordley right to the final whistle and narrowly lost 2-1. Blyth Town saw off Percy Main Amateurs 5-2, whilst a local coast derby had Cullercoats beating neighbours Whitley Bay Reserves 3-1. League leaders Newcastle Chemfica saw off a spirited North Shields Athletic 3-2. Seaton Deleval AFC progressed at the expense of Shankhouse thanks to a 2-0 win. The final result was the tightest and required penalties, Ponteland United winning it 3-1 after a 2-2 draw up at Wallington. The only Premier Division game saw the Durham FA clubs Gateshead Rutherford AFC & Winlaton Vulcans meeting, with Rutherford winning 3-1.

The Minor Cup did see a few teams defeated by lower ranked sides. Morpeth Town Reserves & AFC Newbiggin Central on the end of 3-1 defeats. Cramlington Town the only other Alliance team to exit the competition going down 3-1 at home to Red House Farm. Ponteland United Reserves, Newcastle East End & West Jesmond AFC all had comfortable wins, whilst Seaton Burn & Seaton Sluice progressed due to opposition withdrawing.
