NFL Draft 2017: 5 Teams Who Should Draft A Quarterback

The 2017 NFL Quarterback Draft Class is considered one of the worst in recent memory, with many saying none are first-round picks. However, the need for a quarterback for many teams will likely overrule this, so here are 5 teams that should draft a quarterback (in no particular order).

1. Cleveland Browns - The Browns shouldn't use the top pick on a quarterback, but the 12th pick could be a good option. Reports are saying that the Browns are considering taking UNC QB Mitchell Trubisky with the top pick, but I think it's likely he'd fall to 12th. The Browns are in dire need of a better quarterback than Cody Kessler, but I think they should wait a few rounds and get a developmental guy rather than using a top pick on a QB this year. Next year's class is much better, and we still don't know what Kessler can be. However, I think Cleveland needs a temporary backup-plan quarterback, and should look to draft a guy late.

2. New York Jets - The Jets are the team I think most needs to draft a quarterback, be it this year or next. They have the advantage of having a system that a rookie quarterback in this year's mobile-QB mold can learn well. I don't think they're a team that would draft a quarterback as high as 6th overall, but the second round could be an option. Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg are the team's top two on the depth chart, and I don't think that spells good fortune for a team in a division with the New England Patriots (see last year's 41-3 loss). Some guys that could slide into the second round who I think are good for New York's system are Notre Dame QB DeShone Kizer or Clemson QB Deshaun Watson. Both are mobile and have big arms, which could be very useful in the Jets' offense.

3. Houston Texans - The Houston Texans may need to draft a quarterback even more than the Jets. The Texans have a big group of star players (DeAndre Hopkins, J.J. Watt, Jadeveon Clowney, etc.) who are in their prime. This means that the team has to be in win-now mode, in a stage where their division is becoming better and better. To win, the Texans will need a good quarterback, and Tom Savage might not be the man to do it. The Texans have a limited window, as do all teams, to win a Super Bowl, and they might have to draft a QB to do it. If they choose a guy early, Trubisky, Watson, or Texas Tech QB Patrick Mahomes II make sense as big-arm guys who would unleash Hopkins and Will Fuller V. If the Texans want a later guy, Tennessee's Joshua Dobbs and Mississippi's Chad Kelly are also big-arm talents.

4. Dallas Cowboys - No, the Cowboys don't need a starting quarterback. Dak Prescott is that guy. However, imagine if he went down. The team's only backup is Kellen Moore, so expect the Cowboys to buy late on an athletic guy like Tiffin's Antonio Pipkin or Virginia Tech's Jerod Evans. Both are mobile, athletic guys who could learn and back up Prescott for years to come, and could build up some stock to become value trade targets in the future.

5. Washington Redskins - The Kirk Cousins situation has become... interesting. Let's say that. The team's two consecutive franchise tags on Cousins make some contradictory points without a statement from the team. Cousins may not have been involved in trade talks, but other reports said he asked to be traded, while still others said he asked the team to clarify his position. So even he wasn't sure. The two franchise tags make it clear that the team sees value in Cousins, but that they think that he isn't a top-of-the-market quarterback, which could cause trouble. Anyway, if this is going in the direction it seems, it would be wise of Washington to draft a successor who could get in some reps before being thrust into the starting role once Cousins hits free agency again next year. This makes quarterback either a high priority or a very low one. If they want to draft high, UNC quarterback Mitchell Trubisky could be an option, as could Notre Dame QB DeShone Kizer, as both are very good in the mid-to-long range system that Washington played and will likely play. If it isn't a big deal, the team could still draft a guy late like Pennsylvania's Alec Torgerson who is consistent and talented.
