Free Agency Notes; Wilson Ramos, Rich Hill, Yoenis Cespedes, Jose Bautista and Edwin Encarnacion, Ivan Nova, Kenley Jansen To Tigers?, Mark Melancon
Some notes on some of the top free agents this offseason;
-Wilson Ramos hopes to land a four to five year contract this offseason, according to sources. While Ramos probably won't end up with a fully guaranteed contract of that length due to his knee injury, he could land something of a three year deal with a smaller salary after which he could opt out for a bigger contract after the first year.
-Rich Hill's fantastic season will guarantee him at least a 3-year deal in free agency, but by my estimation, he very well could land a fourth year because of his ace-like numbers.
-Yoenis Cespedes will opt out of his contract with the Mets, and with another elite season under his belt, the Mets are unlikely to retain him unless they offer him a big long-term deal instead of the contract they gave him last offseason, by my speculation.
-The Blue Jays have plenty of options in free agency to replace Jose Bautista and Edwin Encarnacion, but the team still expects to at least be considered one of the favorites for at least one of the two sluggers, that is, if they make a competitive offer and it looks like Mark Shapiro and Ross Atkins will try to do.
-Due to the barren starting pitching market, will Ivan Nova land a five-year contract? If he does, it certainly won't be with the Pirates, who plan to offer only a three-year deal at max.
-The Tigers have a decision to make on closer Francisco Rodriguez's club option, but if they are to decline it, would a run at Kenley Jansen be in the cards? Jansen is going to command a big salary, and with the Tigers trying to cut payroll this offseason, that would seem to put that out of the question.
-The Nationals are expected to go hard in re-signing closer Mark Melancon this offseason, according to sources. Melancon performed really well for the team after being acquired from the Pirates during the trade deadline.
