Royals trade Alec Mills to Cubs for Donnie Dewees

The Kansas City Royals officially signed starter Jason Hammel on Wednesday following him passing the physical earlier in the afternoon. In order to make room for Jason Hammel on the 40-man roster the Royals designated Alec Mills for assignment.

Alec Mills, 25, was drafted in 2012, and saw his first big league action in 2016. Mills pitched in 3-games out of the bullpen tossing 3.1-innings, giving up 3-hits, and 5-earned-runs. In a small sample-size Mills, like all young pitchers, struggled finding the strike-zone constantly as he walked 5-batters in 3-innings. Mills still needs polishing but many including myself saw him as a potential bullpen arm. In a bullpen that is set to take a huge step-back in 2017 and return to baseball normalcy with an average-to-blew-average bullpen.

News broke this evening that Alec Mills who earlier in the day was designated for assignment has been traded to the Cubs, for Donnie Dewees.

Donnie Dewees is 23, and a single-A all-star. Drafted by the Chicago Cubs in 2015, Dewees has a lot of upside. Dewees out of the University of North Florida stands 5'11, weighing in at 180-pounds both throws and hits left-handed. In 2016, Dewees hit .284, slugging .416, collected 25-doubles, 12-triples, and hit 5-homers. Spending 2016 in both high-A and low-A ball. Later down the road, Dewees will be an exciting name to watch for.
