2016 MLB Awards Wrap Up

The 2016 MLB awards have all been officially handed out. Here is a complete wrap up of the results:

American League MVP: Mike Trout wins his 2nd MVP award and it is his 5th straight year finishing in the top two at only 25 years old. He is only the 2nd player to accomplish that feat, following Barry Bonds in 2000-2004. Many thought he would be snubbed because of his team record (Los Angeles was 74-88), but he beat out Mookie Betts, who finished 2nd, and Jose Altuve, who finished 3rd. Betts may have lost some votes due to his hitter friendly home ballpark at Fenway, and Altuve faded some down the stretch, opening the door for Trout to win. David Ortiz finished 6th in his remarkable final season.

National League MVP: Kris Bryant was nearly a unanimous winner, one year removed from his National League ROY award. Bryant took 29 of the 30 first place votes, while the other went to 2nd place finisher Daniel Murphy. Murphy just edged out rookie Corey Seager of the Dodgers, who finished 3rd. Bryant's teammate, Anthony Rizzo, finished fourth. Seager and Bryant should remain top contenders for several years to come.

American League Cy Young: Perhaps the most controversial award this year, Rick Porcello narrowly beat 2nd place finisher Justin Verlander. Verlander had the most 1st place votes, 14 for Verlander vs 8 for Porcello, but Verlander was left off some ballots which resulted in his 2nd place finish. Porcello had the more impressive win/loss ratio, but had the benefit of huge run support from Boston's powerful offense. Verlander had better volume numbers, but pitched behind the worst run support among the top finishers in the Cy Young voting. Corey Kluber finished 3rd in the voting and Zach Britton, Baltimore's dominant closer, finished fourth.

National League Cy Young: The Cy Young in the National League was far less controversial, with Max Scherzer easily winning, taking home 25 of the 30 first place votes. Cubs teammates Jon Lester and Kyle Hendricks finished 2nd and 3rd respectively, Madison Bumgarner finished fourth, and Clayton Kershaw rounded out the top 5 in a year where he missed about one third of his starts due to injury. It is Kershaw's 6th straight top 5 finish at only 28 years old.

American League Rookie of the Year: In a two horse race, Michael Fullmer of the Tigers beat out Gary Sanchez of the Yankees. Fullmer took 26 of the 30 first place votes in a year where he finished among the league leaders in ERA. Gary Sanchez had a historic start to his career, but only played in 53 games as he was only called up to the big leagues in August. Fullmer gets the win for his full season performance.

National League Rookie of the Year: As expected, Corey Seager, who finished 3rd in the MVP voting, was the unanimous winner. He was followed by Trea Turner of the Nationals, who had an extremely impressive season, but like Gary Sanchez, was a mid season call up. Turner only played in 73 games, or else he may have been right up there with Seager in the MVP voting as well.
