Will selection committee choose Ohio State or Penn State?

The No. 2 Ohio State Buckeyes entered championship weekend with a calm demeanor. Then all of the wrong teams won their conference titles. First, the No. 4 Washington Huskies throttled Colorado. On Saturday, No. 3 Clemson survived a game effort from Virginia Tech, while No. 7 Penn State came back from a 21-point deficit to defeat the Wisconsin Badgers, 38-31.

All of a sudden, the Buckeyes smiles turned into a little bit of concern. To be fair, the Buckeyes were going to sweat out Selection Sunday no matter what. However, the Buckeyes defeated the Badgers during the regular season. Therefore, Ohio State could state their case for being the lone team from the Big Ten in the College Football Playoff. They also knew about their loss to the Nittany Lions.

Can we be real for a second? The selection committee already knew about Penn State's win over Ohio State. They also placed the Nittany Lions five spots behind the Buckeyes, so would a seven point win over the Badgers really vault Penn State into the Final Four? After all, the Buckeyes defeated the Badgers by seven points as well. In addition, the Wolverines beat the Badgers by seven points too.

Due to the top three teams in the Big Ten East splitting their games, the College Football Playoff selection committee will be splitting hairs on Sunday. The Wolverines had the most impressive win over Penn State by 39 points. Ohio State made a brilliant, yet controversial overtime comeback over the Wolverines last week. The Nittany Lions used a combination of Grant Haley and Marcus Allen to knock of the Buckeyes. They are the same two players that tackled Corey Clement on fourth down.

During non-conference play, the Buckeyes dominated Big 12 Champion Oklahoma. Michigan defeated PAC-12 runner-up Colorado. Meanwhile, the Nittany Lions suffered a three point loss to Pittsburgh. Yes, the same Pittsburgh team that beat the ACC champion Clemson Tigers.

However, there could be one loss that dooms the Buckeyes and Wolverines. When Michigan lost to Iowa on a last second field goal, the game set the Big Ten on course for an alternate universe ending. Due to one kick by Keith Duncan, the Buckeyes couldn't play for the Big Ten title.

It may be the play that keeps Ohio State out of the College Football Playoff. By the way, Penn State is on a nine game winning streak.
