CFB Week 6 Headlines.

Here are the ten headlines from a week full of upsets, rivalry games and shake ups in the Top 20.

* Sooners get caught in a Cyclone.

As tropical cyclone; Nate, was hitting the Gulf Coast, Cyclone Kyle Kempt hit Norman, Oklahoma. The Sooners playoff hopes took a hit with the 38-31 loss to Iowa State. Cyclone quarterback; Kyle Kempt, looked anything but a third stringer, going 18-24 for 343 yards and three touchdowns.

Iowa State broke an 18 game losing streak to the Sooners and only their sixth win in the series out of 82 meetings. Oklahoma will have to shake this off quickly because a trip to the Texas State Fair against a resurgent Texas awaits them this Saturday.

Oklahoma was a 31 point favorite against Iowa State.

* Hurricanes strike Tallahassee.

The Miami Hurricanes broke a seven game losing streak to the Seminoles with their 24-20, last minute win. Florida State receiver; Auden Tate, hauled in a 20 yard touchdown pass with 1:24 remaining to lead 20-17. But they left six seconds too many for the Hurricanes. Miami receiver; Darrell Langham, snatched a 23 yard pass where it appeared that his knee hit the ground before the ball broke the plane. The lengthy replay review proved inconclusive to overturn the touchdown call.

Florida State falls to 1-3; its worst start since 1976. Miami, on the other hand, doesn't have the problem of collapsing after losing to Florida State, which plagued them numerous times in recent years. They are a real threat in the ACC.

* Spartans over Wolverines; 14-10.

It was an old school type Big Ten football game except the game was played under the lights at Michigan Stadium. 'Little Brother' Michigan State did it again to Michigan as it held on in the driving second half rainstorm. Sparty scored both of its touchdowns in the first half, but only managed 252 total yards of offense. Michigan was very generous with five turnovers.

Michigan head coach; Jim Harbaugh, falls to 1-4 against Michigan State and Ohio State. Spartans head coach; Mark Dantonio, is 8-2 against Michigan.

* Tigers bite Gators ; 17-16.

LSU bounced back after their embarrassing home loss to Troy by chalking up a win in Gainesville. What made it sweeter for the Tigers is that in the midst of the acrimony between the two schools, Florida decided to make this game a Homecoming game.

LSU led throughout and gashed the Florida defense for 133 first half rushing yards. Florida came back and appeared to have the game tied with 1:45 remaining; but Gator kicker; Eddy Pinero, missed the extra point due to a bad hold after the snap.

* The Frogs rule the Big 12.

TCU passed another major test Saturday; beating West Virginia, 31-24 to remain unbeaten. TCU quarterback; Kenny Hill's three yard touchdown run with 2:53 left was the game winner.

The Frogs may be the Big 12's only hope for a playoff appearance after Oklahoma's shock loss to Iowa State.

* Resurgent Longhorns over Kansas State in 2 OT.

The Texas Longhorns improve to 2-0 in the Big 12 with their double overtime victory over Kansas State; 40-34. The game seesawed throughout. Kansas State kicker; Matthew McCrane, doinked the left upright, missing a 53 yard field goal attempt in the second overtime. Texas running back; Chris Warren, punched into the end zone for the win.

Texas will buckle down for the Red River Rivalry this Saturday.

* Wolfpack are howling in the ACC.

The NC State Wolfpack have become the main threat to Clemson in the ACC Atlantic by beating Louisville; 39-25. NC State cleared a major obstacle in their ACC title push.

The NC State fans serenaded the Cardinals with F.B.I. chants, referring to the investigation into college basketball latest play for pay. The Louisville basketball program has been hit the hardest so far with the dismissal of coach, Rick Pitino.

NC State stands at 5-1. They have an easy assignment at Pitt this week. They face Clemson at home, November 4th.

* Cardinal gets back in the PAC 12 North race.

The Stanford Cardinal traveled to Rice Eccles Stadium to hand Utah its first loss of the season, 23-20. Everyone in the PAC 12 South have at least one loss. Stanford still has everything in front of them; facing both of the Washington teams in November.

Stanford running back; Bryce Love, should start getting Heisman attention. He has 118 carries for 1240 yards; (10.5 average), and nine touchdowns. He ripped Utah for 152 yards and a touchdown.

* A new top shootout is on the books.

Western Michigan finally got the best of Buffalo, 71-68 in seven overtimes. The 139 points sets a new FBS record in points scored, exceeding the 137 points scored in the Pitt 76-61 victory over Syracuse a year ago; (although that game didn't go into overtime.) The seven overtimes tied the record.

There were 63 total combined first downs and 1328 total combined yards gained. Buffalo quarterback; Drew Anderson, was 35-61 for 597 yards and seven touchdowns.

* How sweet could the Apple Cup be this year?

Apples may be the bumper crop this year in the Pacific Northwest. Both the Huskies and Cougars are 6-0 and both should be in the Top 10 in this week's polls. Washington took California out with ease; 38-7, and Washington State beat a Herbert less Oregon at Autzen Stadium; 33-10.

Both teams have quite a bit of work ahead of them as they enter the meat of their schedules. Stanford still has a say in this race as the Huskies travel to the Farm, November 10th. Stanford goes to Pullman, November 4th.

If both of these Washington state teams run the table, the Apple Cup will be appointment viewing. In state rivals, the PAC 12 North on the line, Luke Falk vs. Jake Browning, cats vs. dogs. It's what college football should be about.

The game is at Washington; November 25th.
