“BJJ, originally Gracie Jiu Jitsu, was developed by Helio Gracie so that a small weaker man could survive and eventually overcome a bigger stronger opponent,” explained Katz. “Wrestling was developed as a competition between two physically similar athletes.”

Katz said this background makes it clear that even though BJJ does have its place in MMA, Wrestling provides better benefit. He added that Wrestling has an advantage over BJJ in that a better Wrestler chooses where the fight happens. “If you are a better Jits guy than me but you can’t take me to the ground because my takedown defense is too good, it does not matter how good your jits is,” he elaborated.

Katz said that BJJ, together with Karate and Judo, were developed around the 1900s. “I’ve heard that around 90% of today’s wrestling moves were depicted on the pyramids,” said Katz. He said that because Wrestling is that old, it is therefore better than BJJ and is the most evolved of the two based on historical timelines.

Look out for the third part of this discussion as the week progresses.
