Yesterday Was A Much Needed Day for St. Louis Sports

April 12, 2017, will by no means go down as one of the best days in St. Louis sports history, but it sure felt great, all the way around. On the baseball side, the Cardinals finally fired on all cylinders, winning 6-1 in Washington. Both St. Louis City and County brought suit against the NFL, the teams, and all of the owners, for the deceit that cost them so much time and money while trying to keep the Rams in St. Louis, when it was never a possibility. As for the Blues . . . Jake Allen.

Mike Leake was great for the second straight start, not allowing a run, on only four hits, while striking out seven, through seven innings of work. Fortunately for him, the offense showed up this time around, in particular, Stephen Piscotty, who tied his career high in RBIs, with five, coming up only a triple shy of the cycle. The Cardinals had been struggling mightily coming into Wednesday’s game, so the errorless, well rounded attack, was desperately needed, as they went on to win 6-1, improving to 3-6 for the season. They will be in New York Friday, to take on a hot hitting Matt Holliday and the Yankees.

On top of the Cardinals win, St. Louis welcomed more good news, on Wednesday. The City and the County have decided to sue the NFL, all 30 teams, and all their owners, for the events that took place leading to the Rams move to Los Angeles. We don’t have to relive the whole scenario, but in case you didn’t know, the City of St. Louis, St. Louis County, and the Governor of Missouri, were blatantly lied to, multiple times, as they were attempting to put a plan together, to build a stadium, and keep the Rams in St. Louis. Everyone from the Rams, and the NFL knew a relocation was imminent, but decided to lead on the people and governing bodies of St. Louis, which cost them millions of dollars, and countless hours. There has been some speculation that St. Louis will seek monetary damages, that will likely amount to the relocation fee, which was around $650 million. Whether they do receive a settlement from the NFL, win the suit, or neither, if this is in any way, a thorn in the side of the NFL and its teams, it will be worth it to all those who suffered through the loss of the Rams.

To top it all off, the Blues went into Minnesota, and won the first game of their opening playoff series, in overtime, by a score of 2-1. The Blues did not play particularly well, but were saved by one man. That man, is Jake Allen. Allen was a monster between the pipes last night, saving 51 of 52 shots, only giving up one goal to 6 attackers, after the Wild pulled their goalie, with 1:05 left, in the third period. The Wild were visibly faster last night, outshot the Blues 52-26, and overall outplayed them, but they had no answer for Allen, who saved the Blues last night, and led them to a huge OT win, that essentially gives them home ice advantage for the rest of this series.

The Cardinals may lose their next game, the City and County may not win their law suit against the NFL, and the Blues might go on to lose four in a row (God forbid), and get beat out of the playoffs, but, for now, all is well in The Lou.
