Got it Right- Got it Wrong #2: Canadian Love
This could become a standard for me; especially if the world of sports keeps lobbing in the wrongs so easily.
Got it Wrong- The Michigan Football Hat trick
Not only are the Wolverines a stage below bad this year. Soon to be unemployed Brady Hoke kept QB Shane Morris in the game despite suffering a concussion after being nailed by Minnesota defender Theiren Cockran. If that was not enough, Athletic Director Dave Brandon defended Hoke and even hinted it was the QB’s fault because he did not communicate the injury properly. The Wolverines have a rich athletic tradition and these guys are making a mess of the program.
Got it Right- Canadian Women’s Sports
First the Soccer team grabbed Olympic Bronze in 2012, then Bouchard had an epic run at Wimbledon falling just short of the title, then the Rugby team lost in the World Cup finals, the hockey team continues to dominate and now the Basketball team are on a run at the Worlds. Let’s take notice of these amazing athletes who are looking great on the international stage.
Got it Wrong – NFL Referees
Chief’s receiver Husain Abdullah was flagged for praying after he scored a touchdown Monday night. Since no one ever considered flagging Tebow for his antics, you have to give the zebras a couple of smacks for this one. Maybe the NFL could agree to not penalize celebrations during the game and ding the team afterwards. The game is supposed to be fun after all.
Got it Right – MLB Wildcard Play-In Games
It’s just one game in each league but it has given life to clubs who need it and it creates a tonne of drama. The American League wildcard classic between the Royals and A’s made many wonder if they had time travelled back to the 80s. The winner take all event gives other teams a chance to rest while giving two others a great opportunity. How can you not be excited for the Royals? Unless you are an A’s fan! Unfortunately, San Francisco and Pittsburgh could not generate the same excitement.
Got it Wrong – Athletic Declarations
If you have to state something, it probably isn’t true. If you have to tell the media how they should see you or evaluate your play, you are probably wrong. From Dion Waiters to Carmelo Anthony, I am tired of hearing athletes tell me how great they see themselves. Swaggy, if you can beat Kobe, just do it. But for a lifetime NBA loser, your act is getting tiring.
PS Dion, you are not important to the Cavs success!
Got it Right- Canadian University Sports
They are not big time and I don’t think you can bet on them in Vegas but they are what they should be; a chance for students to participate in varsity athletics. No one is getting rich off the CIS but it is self-sufficient. There are not a lot of pro prospects or prima-donnas but through it all the competition is great. Want some real inspiration, take in a basketball double header in UCCB or a Huskies Football game. (Huskies is a great choice because there are a few universities named Huskies.) The student can get a modest scholarship but it seems fairer. In the end, the university experience remains about education and not a development league for the pros.
