So That was June…

As a teacher, June might be the most emotional month of the year.

I know when I meet the students in grade nine that their existence in my world is usually limited to four years. Of course a percentage will choose to keep in touch after they graduate and others may become friends or even close friends but for the most part they are gone.

There is also the hustle and bustle of trying to clue up all required work and make sure the next year won’t start as an unprepared disaster. Then there is the sudden realization that you will have two months of freedom or you will have two months of nothing to do, depending on your point of view.

If I was just a teacher, June would wear me down naturally. But like all of us, we are not just our jobs. As a month, June kicked me around like an old can.

Athletes We Lost

Gordie Howe and Mohammad Ali

I believe this cartoon says it all. I have enjoyed watching highlights of both and appreciating their uniqueness. I am not completely sure if either was the greatest at their respective craft but each has their own place in the conversation. Maybe instead of having arguments about who is the greatest, maybe the discussion is who was most special to us.

Pat Summitt: The Mentor to my Mentors is my ___________.

I remember hearing stories about Pat Summitt when I first started playing basketball. I loved her attitude that coaching women should never be seen as a lesser accomplishment than coaching men. When I was in high school, the guy’s teams always had the stronger coaching. (Even though two of these coaches were female.) Because of the attitudes of coaches like Pat Summitt and Joyce Slipp, I decided that I would never give male teams more attention than the female teams. Pat Summitt’s reach into the sporting world was far and deep and her life ended way too soon.

Buddy Ryan and Kimbo Slice

Championships Were decided

Pittsburgh Penguins Win 2016 Stanley Cup

Leaf fans everywhere are still mad about Phil.

Cleveland Cavaliers Win 2016 NBA Championship

I was moved by LeBron’s emotions after the Cavs clinched it. My first blog was about Andy Murray and how emotional his 2013 Wimbledon win was. I have finally found something that is on par with that win. I have had my negative and positive opinions on LeBron, neither of which he read, but I was genuinely happy after he won. This battle cry capped it for me

But I cannot watch this commercial without getting a little glassy eyed

Dustin Johnson got his Major

I will refrain from making a major babe comment about Pauline Gretzky… There, I refrained. So there’s that.

Of course there is Iceland

How in the hell is a country of 330000 people competing with the best soccer players Europe has to offer? They will be the inspiration for my small school teams next year and for years to come.

The Running Challenge Ended

After 511 kilometers and 169 runs, the 15x 365 streak ended. I gave it a good try but in the end, life sometimes just doesn’t allow things to happen. I have given my legs some healing time since and I have found my next conquest, but more on that later.

So thanks June. You beat me up, danced me around, spit me out, lifted me up, made me laugh, made me contemplate, and made me cry. So much happened that I didn't even get to Skip Bayless finally leaving or Bill Simmons' new show. I hope you are happy. The hangover should end sometime around August.
