Why the Knicks should move on from Carmelo Anthony
Just when you think that this Knicks season could not have gotten any worst, this video pretty much summarizes the Knicks season as a whole thus far.
With a 18-23 record and losing 10 out of their last 12 games, this season may very well turn out to be, if it hasn't already another forgettable and disappointing season.
Unfortunately, the guy who is front and center to this whole debacle has been Carmelo Anthony. So why is he still a part of this sinking ship? I believe it's time for the Knicks and Carmelo to part ways if they are ever going to be a championship team again. With this season starting to slip away from them, the talk of whether or not Melo should waive his no-trade clause has been brought back to his attention. Melo, when asked about if he has even considered it, said: "I've never even thought about that." He added "I guess people are talking about it but its not something I've thought about so far. "
Unless some miracle turnaround occurs within the next couple of weeks, it's already a foregone conclusion how this season will play out if the same results occur with the Knicks continuing to lose. What is also interesting is how the bickering relationship between Melo and Phil is playing out in front of us. With one of Phil's longtime friends Charley Rosen chiming in on his opinion of Melo in a recent article writing that "The only sure thing is that Carmelo Anthony has outlived his usefulness in New York." Even if that didn't come from the horses' mouth in Phil himself, his feelings are very clear and a breakup is inevitable between the two parties.
This past week gave us a clear indication as to how bad the Knicks are as a franchise. From D-Rose going AWOL on Monday while not notifying the club on his whereabouts, The Knicks decided to fine him but not suspend him for his actions. On Wednesday they blew a 10-point lead in the 4th quarter to the Sixers and lost at the buzzer. This Knick season is imploding right in front of our eyes.
If the Knicks want to go back to relevancy and focus on being a championship team, then getting rid of Melo should be a priority. Kristaps Porzingis is the future for the Knicks and Melo is easily holding his growth back. Trading Melo to a contending team like Cleveland or to LA would make sense instead of trying to be stubborn to see if the season could be salvaged. He could also ride it out for this season if he wanted too. He does have two years left on his deal with a player option for the final year and can wait till then if he is having second thoughts on staying with the Knicks.
Carmelo does carry the key to his future, but the future looks more and more bleak in NY. He may not be the same player he once was, but he isn't helping himself or the Knicks by holding them hostage until the right deal is in place that is if he wants to take it. Until that day comes, it will be another long dreadful year for the Knicks franchise if they have any hope left.
