The Hypocrisy Of Dwight Howard

Even though Dwight Howard is having a magnificent season in Atlanta, it is time to call into question whether his unhappiness in Houston was warranted. During his last season, there were several reports that Howard was extremely unhappy with his role in the Houston Rockets offense. The primary source of his unhappiness came from the fact that Houston wanted him to be a player who stood near the paint thus allowing him to get in position to grab the offensive rebound, get tip-ins or catch lobs. But Howard wanted to get more touches in the low post which would have allowed him the opportunity to prove that he could be a traditional big man. For instance, he wanted to receive the ball in the low post which would give him the opportunity to back his defender deep into the paint and allowing to shoot the hook or get an easy dunk. Unfortunately, Houston refused because they wanted to give James Harden as much open space as possible to run the offense.

As a result of this, Dwight Howard decided to leave the Rockets after last season and signed with the Atlanta Hawks thinking that he would play a significant role in their offense. Unfortunately, that hasn't been the case because the team has primarily used him as a player who is in charge of standing near the paint in position to get the offensive rebound, tip-ins or catch lobs. Furthermore, the Hawks occasionally use him as a screener in a pick and roll where his primary job is to set the screen and roll to the basket to get in position for a lob or easy dunk. While this role has helped Dwight Howard be productive at this stage in his career, it is very similar to the role that led to his unhappiness in Houston. Therefore, one can view Howard as a hypocrite for being upset with a role on one team but okay with it on another team.
