In my Sport’s Writing class I was able to learn a lot about themes in sport writing that I would of never thought of exploring. I am a big fan of sports, especially soccer, and that is why I decided to take this class since it dealt with sports. I learned more than just sports in this class. I was able to learn about different approaches to sports writing and why authors make certain decisions in their writings. As a reader in this class, I experienced themes of author’s use of narratives such as work of authors like Grantland Rice and Murray Kempton. Their way of writing added a “narrative” and “story” to their piece of writing about sports. Other examples of themes I covered for example was masculinity in sports like the work done by authors like Solotaroff and Kretchmer. Solotaroff talked about the life of Steve Michalik and his addiction to steroids to make him become stronger and better. Kretchmer talked about Dick Butkus and how he destroyed anyone in the field that he encountered. I discovered and explored great themes throughout my course as a reader.

As a writer, I developed my writing skills from the work of authors that I read. Every piece of writing and essay came from and were relative to the readings we read. For example, there were gonzo readings that we read in class and one of my writings came this reflection. I used the readings to base off what does a gonzo reading contain and what elements of writing does the author use. As a writer I tried to reflect on pieces from the readings and write from my own style a gonzo piece of writing. It was a hard assignment that I went through because I did not know how exactly I cold make my writing sound sarcastic. In general, I had struggles in starting to write my assignments. Once having a topic done though it became easier to go with the writing. Through my experience I felt I improved in ways that I could perform better in my writings, but it is something that I still need to practice in.
