2017 Top 300 Fantasy Baseball Dynasty League Rankings (New Statistic)

Gary A. Vasquez-USA TODAY Sports

Hello all you dedicated and crazy fantasy baseball fans. While I know we are all enjoying the playoffs, many people have asked me about when my rankings for the 2017 season will be released. Well, today is your lucky day. Over the last few weeks, I have been working on a new and improved statistical formula to value players in a dynasty league. For those who aren't familiar with dynasty leagues, here is my personal definition: A fantasy baseball league where your drafted roster is carried over year after year.

In case that definition doesn't quite make sense, let me explain what I look for when I value a player in this kind of league. While this is fantasy baseball, I think dynasty leagues are the closest you are going to get as a fan to actually valuing a player similar to a Major League Baseball General Manager. Of course a GM's job is much, much more complex, but these kind of leagues are some of the most complex fantasy leagues you can find. Since the rosters carry over from year to year, the age of a player typically holds the most value. Since a player could be on your team for years and years, it is more valuable to pick a player who is 25, compared to a player who is 35 and nearing retirement. While the 35 year old does hold value, if he is still producing, the upside of the young player is much more valuable long-term. There are many other factors to take into consideration for a dynasty league, but I will go into more depth later in the article.

There are multiple factors that went into the creation of this formula. These factors include age, league experience, multi-positional eligibility, 2016 and 2015 statistics, positional value, and closer value. At first, I included multiple years prior to 2015 and 2016, but I found that this skewed the statistics and didn't fairly value players to their current ability. I also thought about including some kind of projection system, but I have always been an advocate of evaluating players based on historical data and then adjusting the expectations of a player based on your own personal scouting. With that said, I do find projections very helpful at times, but I tend to take those statistics with a grain of salt. You can find the description of each factor and reasoning behind the factor below:

Please note: Minor league players will not be involved in these rankings. Please check my blog over the next few weeks for my prospect rankings in dynasty leagues. It is also worth noting that it is better to have a lower value with this statistic than a higher value, much like golf.

2015 and 2016 Statistics (and categories used): The most recent two years (2015 and 2016) were used to determine the statistics of each player. Since every league has different stats, I incorporated as many as possible to figure out the best overall dynasty players. Every statistic was divided by plate appearances in order to determine the best overall talent without taking into account playing time or partial seasons due to injuries or promotions/demotions. Once I determined the relevant statistics, I figured out each player's rank compared to his peers in every statistic. I then added up all of the players ranks and divided that number by the amount of statistics used. I then took that number and divided it by the amount of players to get a weighted average. Following this step, I multiplied the most recent statistics (2016) by .75 because I believe the most recent statistics are the most important. The 2015 statistic was kept the same and multiplied by 1. You can see the statistics used below:

Offensive statistics (all divided by plate appearances unless otherwise stated by an asterisk and must have more than 100 AB to qualify): Runs, Home Runs, RBIs, Strikeouts, Stolen Bases, Total Bases, OBP*, Slugging Percentage*, and Batting Average*

Starting Pitching Statistics (must have over 10 starts to qualify): Quality Start %, Hits/Innings Pitched, Walks Per 9 innings, total strikeouts (didn't divide this because I wanted a statistic that would incorporate the value of a starting pitcher pitching deep into the game), ERA, and WHIP

Relief Pitching Statistics (must have less than 10 starts and less than 30% games started): Hits/Innings Pitched, Walks Per 9 Innings, Strikeouts/Innings Pitched, Saves, Holds, ERA, and WHIP

Age: As I mentioned earlier, age plays a huge role in this type of league. Due to this, different age groups receive different point values in the statistic. Point values are found below:

Below 22 years old: 0 points

23-26 years old: .05 points

26-30 years old: .1 points

30-34 years old: .15 points

Above 35 years old: .2 points

League Experience: Since some players can just have a "fluke year," then I created an experience benefit. If a player only played in one of the two seasons used in statistics, then .1 was added to their final total. Once a player plays two seasons, then they have proved their value wasn't a fluke or was a fluke, and they don't get any points added to their total. Even if a player was injured for a full season, then this addition of points is added due to the fear or worry that a player has regressed or is still struggling with the injury. This basically only affects rookies or players with a long-term injury.

Positional Value: Throughout my years of playing fantasy baseball, hitters have almost always been valued more than pitchers. This is mostly due to the fact that hitters play every day and pitchers only pitch every 5 days or for a few innings (relievers). People also value batters more because of the fear that pitchers will injure their elbows. Relief pitchers also have more added points because starting pitchers tend to have quite a lot more value than relief pitchers. Non-closing relief pitchers also have a different evaluation. The positional values are below:

Offensive Player: 0 points

Starting Pitcher (same eligibility mentioned above): .02 points

Relief Pitcher/Closer (Less than 30% games started and 10 or more saves in the most recent season): .1 points

Relief Pitcher/Non-Closer (Less than 30% games started and less than 10 saves): .30 points

The last step of the statistic is to multiple the final number of each player by 100 to make the statistical values easier to read. You can see the final results and rankings below. My personal dynasty league rankings will be released in the next few weeks.
