The St. Louis Cardinals officially announced the skipper of the team, manager Mike Matheny, will be with the team through 2020 with his second contract extension.

Matheny was signed in 2012, and his first contract extension was through the 2017 season. Now, without the distraction of contract talks, Matheny can move forward with the organization as much work needs to be done this off-season to forego another non-postseason year. 2016 was the first under Matheny's management the team did not advance into postseason play.  "He became the first big league manager ever to lead a team to the postseason in each of his first four seasons and has more wins (461) than any other manager since '12. His .569 winning percentage ranks 18th-highest in baseball history." (Jenifer Langosch, MLB.com

With watching two other teams in the World Series, Cardinals motivation was renewed in the path they must take to be apart of the 2017 and future playoffs. They have collected talent on the team; but, realize there are pieces necessary to be added for future success.

BRANDON MOSS - FREE AGENT IN 2017

Brandon Moss, with a major September slump, may be the reason he will miss out on a possible $30 MM contract considerations with the Cardinals.
Jeff Curry-USA TODAY Sports

1B/OF Brandon Moss had spent 1 1/2 seasons with the Cardinals. During the month of August, after returning from the DL (ankle sprain) he saw his average at the plate rise to a .272 with a .553 SLG with 8 HR/21 RBI on 28 hits. However, in September, he experienced a major slump closing the month with a .084 BA. It has been reported, Moss will not be offered a qualifying offer (1 YR/$17.2 MM). The organization is still open to negotiations, but at a lesser amount. He was signed for 1 YR/$8.25 MM in 2016. He is a free agent in 2017.

LHP JAIME GARCIA - $12 MM OPTION FOR 2017

Jaime Garcia, 2017 option picked up by the Cardinals.

The announcement came yesterday, starter LHP Jaime Garcia - Free Agent in 2017. Cardinals pickup the option for Garcia, 1 Yr/$12 MM. Even though Garcia struggled through his 2016 season, closing 10-13/4.67 ERA, they feel he can still be an asset in the upcoming season. Personally, and only my opinion, Garcia will be traded at some point - packaged with one or two other players for a centerfielder, which the Cardinals have announced they are in the market to sign. He is the only "option" player the Cardinals have and will sign this off-season.
