Will Cardinals 2B Kolten Wong Be Sidelined To Begin 2017
Due to a lingering issue with shoulder discomfort, St. Louis Cardinals Kolten Wong may just miss, at least, the beginning of the 2017 season. For those fans who hold the faith in the young 26 year old second baseman will be saddened by the news. I believe a larger number of fans won't mind at all.
Last season, Cardinals playing the Cubs at Wrigley Field, Wong playing left field slipped on the turf injuring his right shoulder.
That happened in September 2016, a season Kolton Wong was unable to really get going at the plate after signing an extension 5 Yr/$25.5 MM in the off-season prior to Opening Day. That took him out of the arbitration eligible picture and past his first year of free agency.
He struggled to hold a .222 BA and only had 5 HR/23 RBI - .355 SLG - for the season. He closed his season with a .240 BA with one good month (July) hitting a .288 average. He was optioned early June, 2016, to work on his "mechanics" and slugged out hits in Memphis Triple-A, along with some home runs. Also, the second baseman was moved to centerfield. Had speed, but length of throw was not quite enough for center; so, used in the corner. With former Cardinals LF Matt Holliday HBP injury, which fractured his thumb and required surgery, Cardinals outfielders were moved around to accommodate Holliday's absence and Wong penciled in as needed.
Now, due to the shoulder stress which evidently is still bothersome, the question will be is surgery in his future. Per Twitter, Derrick Goold (St. Louis Post-Dispatch)
Wong has been going through shoulder strengthening work, and must clear out "some stuff." He asked if he needs surgery. Answer: "Not yet."— Derrick Goold (@dgoold) February 25, 2017
Spring training games began yesterday, Cardinals facing the Miami Marlins - Roger Dean Stadium "team" mates. There are five weeks of Spring games yet to be played. If the Cortisone injection did not help in December of the off-season, what is causing the inflammation? He's had all of the off-season to rest his shoulder. What will be the next move be and how soon will fans be told?
