Toothless, Spineless, Hopeless

Three words to sum up Manchester United.

Sir Alex Ferguson retired five years ago. In that time, United have won an F.A Cup, a League Cup and a Europa League, but who cares? Why should anyone care when the club is rotten, broken, cesspit of corporate greed? Manchester United are not the football club they once were. They're not even a 'football' club anymore.

United sit 6th in the table, with a goal difference of 0 and 11 points off 4th and 19 off 1st. For any other 'top' club in Europe, that is more than a sackable situation, but not for Man United, who seem to view that as an unnecessary expense. Ed Woodward is a business man, who has no doubt done well financially, but has done so at the expense of the football club's soul. Sure, United may have just been utterly humbled by Liverpool, but at least the Official Global Mattress and Pillow Partner of Manchester United are bringing in that sweet dollar for the Glazers to suck right back out of the club.

On the field, thing are as bleak as they have ever been. The defence is a shambles, the midfield is static and the attack is absent. Romelu Lukaku has suffered one of the worst season-to-season regressions ever seen, Paul Pogba's volatile on-and-off performances don't reflect his status as record transfer and world cup winner, Nemanja Matic is as static and ineffective player as there's ever been, and the manager is unwilling or unable to see these problems.

Mourinho's Chelsea team even taught Sir Alex a lesson, leading him to switch to a three man midfield that would lead to one of his greatest teams, the European Champions of 2007/08. Mourinho's Inter Milan team of 2009/10 were one of the best assembled. Triumphs like these are the foundation of the 'Serial Winner' moniker, but this season he's been anything but a serial winner. He's barely won, let alone serially. Faced with serious questions about him and his team, all he has offered is deflections. He's won more Premier Leagues than any of the other 19 managers, he won the champions league with Porto and then again with Inter, He needs 'mad dogs', the final score was 1-1 not 3-1 because to goals were deflections. Perhaps he does this to take the media glare off his team and onto him, but it's all just words, words that don't mean anything, words that don't take away from the turgid performances his team are producing.

Man United are past the point of a singular focus of blame. At one point you could have blamed Woodward for not shelling out for a Centre Back in the summer, or blamed Smalling for being out of position or Young or Valencia for not being able to cross, but now it's a toxic cocktail of terrible practices both on and off the field. The board, Ed Woodward, the average players. The are all to blame for the pathetic excuse of a team seen on the field every week.

Something has to change, and quickly. Manchester United, the biggest football club in the world, the most successful Premier League team, a worldwide brand, are now just that, a brand. The football has taken a back seat to the corporate sponsors and official partnerships. It's time for things to change. New manager, new chairman, new Director of Football, new players, whatever it takes to right the sinking ship and stop the decline of the once greatest football club in the world.
