University of Akron junior Sophia Geier was named the Mid-American Conference women’s tennis singles player of the week.

The Zips lost to West Virginia over the weekend, but Geier defeated the Mountaineers’ Kaja Mrgole in two sets 6-1, 6-0. Geier also won her doubles match when she teamed up with fellow junior Ariadna Blinova.

For the season, Geier is 2-1 in singles play and 2-0 in doubles matches.

“Sophia started off the spring season playing at a high level, which is right where she left off in the fall,” coach Brandon Padgett said. “She has been working hard to add more dimensions to her game and it is definitely paying off.”

It was the 25th time in program history that a UA player has received the award, and the first time this season.
