Cubs blank Giants in NLDS Opener

The Chicago Cubs shut out the San Francisco Giants as they win 1-0 in the opener of their NL Division Series.

3B Javier Baez hit the game-winner with a one-out home run in the eighth inning. CL Aroldis Chapman pitched a one-hitter in the ninth to earn his first save of this year’s postseason.

Both starting pitchers dominated and went deep into the game. San Francisco’s Johnny Cueto (0-1) retired the first 10 batters of the game and Chicago’s Jon Lester (1-0) retired the last 13 hitters he faced.

Johnny Cueto went 8 innings, allowing 3 hits and 1 earned run while fanning 10. Jon Lester also pitched 8 innings, giving up 5 hits while striking out 5.

Javier Baez went 2-for-3 with 1 run, 1 HR and 1 RBI.

Game 2 is Saturday evening with San Francisco’s SP Jeff Samardzija going up against Chicago’s SP Kyle Hendricks.
