Cubs shut out Dodgers, win NLCS

The Chicago Cubs defeat the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-0 to win the NL Championship Series in six games and advance to the World Series.

The Cubs took an early lead in the first inning. CF Dexter Fowler led off with a ground rule double and 3B Kris Bryant drove him in with a single.

1B Anthony Rizzo was up next and reached on a fielding error by CF Andrew Toles, which enabled Kris Bryant to advance to third base and Anthony Rizzo to second. 2B Ben Zobrist followed with a sacrifice fly ball and Kris Bryant came home to put the Cubs up 2-0.

Chicago extended their lead in the second inning. SS Addison Russell hit a leadoff double and scored on a two-out single by Dexter Fowler.

A leadoff home run from C Willson Contreras in the fourth and a two-out homer by Anthony Rizzo in the fifth inning gave the Cubs an insurmountable 5-0 lead.

Los Angeles’ SP Clayton Kershaw (1-1) worked 5 innings, allowing 7 hits and 4 earned runs while striking out 4. He finished the NLCS with a 3.00 ERA and 0.83 WHIP.

Chicago’s SP Kyle Hendricks (1-1) pitched a 7.1 inning gem, giving up just 2 hits while fanning 6. He had a 0.71 ERA and 0.71 WHIP in the NLCS. He is 1-1 with a 1.65 ERA and 0.80 WHIP in three postseason starts.

Anthony Rizzo went 2-for-4 with 1 run, 1 HR and 1 RBI. He was batting .320 and recorded 3 runs, 2 HR and 5 RBI in the NLCS. Anthony Rizzo is hitting .225 with 4 runs, 2 HR and 5 RBI in the playoffs.

The Cubs win the NL pennant for the first time since 1945. They last won the World Series in 1908.

Game One of the World Series is on Tuesday night at Progressive Field in Cleveland.
