Tigers embarrass Indians, keep Wildcard Hope alive

The Detroit Tigers (84-73) thrash and blank the Cleveland Indians (91-66) as they win 12-0 in game two of their four-game series.

Detroit started their scoring spree in the first inning. 2B Ian Kinsler drew a leadoff walk and CF Cameron Maybin hit a double. 1B Miggy Cabrera followed with another double and drove in two runs for an early lead.

Miggy Cabrera did one better in the second inning. C James McCann (leadoff single) and Cameron Maybin (two-out walk) were on base when Cabrera hit a three-run homer to put the Tigers up 5-0.

Detroit’s sixth run came in the fourth frame. James McCann was hit by a pitch to open the inning and SS Jose Iglesias hit a single. Ian Kinsler followed with another single to drive James McCann home.

The Tigers put three more runs on the scoreboard in the seventh inning. Miggy Cabrera hit a leadoff single and RF J.D. Martinez walked with one out. LF Justin Upton homered next to give Detroit a 9-0 lead.

Detroit made several substitutions in the eighth but the scoring did not stop. PH Nick Castellanos, who was activated from the DL before the game, hit a ground rule double with one out and came home on a triple by PH Tyler Collins. SS Andrew Romine followed with a home run for the final score of 12-0.

Cleveland’s SP Mike Clevinger (2-3) lasted only 2 innings, surrendering 7 hits, 2 walks and 5 earned runs while striking out 2. His ERA and WHIP rose to 5.33 and 1.51, respectively.

Detroit’s SP Justin Verlander (16-8) pitched 7.2 innings, giving up 4 hits and 1 walk while fanning a season-high 12. He has a 3.10 ERA with a 1.00 WHIP on the season.

Miggy Cabrera went 3-for-3 with 2 runs, 1 HR and 5 RBI. He is batting .311 and has 88 runs, 35 HR and 102 RBI this year.
