Georgetown Falls To Arkansas State
Washington, DC - Coming off a heartbreaking loss against Maryland on Tuesday, Georgetown faced off on their home turf against Arkansas State. The game, played on Georgetown’s campus in historic McDonough Arena, was packed to the rim with students and fans pulled together their best Jimmy Buffett costume for the Maui Invitational Tournament.
The Red Wolves, coming off a big win against Central Baptist 100-57 they played a transition dependent offense and aggressive defense against the Hoyas who were coming off a foul laced game against the Terrapins where they squandered an 8 point lead in the last minute. The Hoyas looked completely different today, having trouble with their ability to finish the play under the basket.
The Hoyas fell behind in the first quarter shooting 34.6%, and were 0-6 from the three point arc against a relentless Red Wolves. Arkansas State played a strong and tight defense as they drew several fouls which led to turnovers in their favor. By the end of the first half, the score was 48-29 with Arkansas State and Devin Carter (Sr.) leading the charge with 19 points. Hoyas’ Jesse Govan led their scoring with 18.
In the second half, the Hoyas came out of the gates shooting well and started to gain ground, cutting the deficit to 8 with just over four minutes remaining. Without Jonathan Mulmore, who injured his lower back, the Hoyas brought the game to within two but were unable to complete the inbound pass with 14.7 seconds left as Georgetown fell to Arkansas State 78-72. After the game, John Thompson III wasn't pleased with the outcome. "It's not a good vibe right now. We have to move on," he said. "We need some practice time. As much as everything else associated [with Maui], we need some time in the gym." To sum up the night, Thompson III didn't discredit the work by Arkansas State and instead put the blame on themselves.“We had an opponent that came and played very well. We took too long to get going."
Devin Carter led scoring for Arkansas State with 25 points and three rebounds. Jessie Govan led for Georgetown with 20 points and eight rebounds. Donte Thomas had perhaps the play of the game with a behind the back one handed layup earlier in the game.
Georgetown continues their season, and their Maui Invitational bid against the University of Oregon on Monday (Nov. 21). Arkansas State continues their season and Maui tournament against Army on Saturday (Nov. 19).
