Martellus Bennett signs with the Green Bay Packers
The Packers have a new starting TE, and it just so happens he just won a Super Bowl with the Patriots. Martellus Bennett has agreed to terms with the Packers today to be their new TE after they released Jared Cook at the start of free agency. Bennett was a key contributor for the New England Patriots as they won another Super Bowl last season, even without Rob Gronkowski. Bennett was brought in to be the #2 next to Gronk, trying to replicate the Patriots 2 TE formula that was so successful back when they had Aaron Hernandez, but Gronk had a season riddled with injuries, so Bennett had to step up in a lot of games, especially after Gronk was lost for the season. He was able to maintain that starting position and helped the Patriots win their 5th Super Bowl ring. His stats aren't mind blowing, but Bennett has always been a solid player throughout his career, and will definitely be an upgrade on Jared Cook for the Packers. Cook, while not terrible, left a lot of plays on the field, and you have to believe the coaching staff was frustrated with some of his performances. With Jordy Nelson, Randall Cobb, and Davante Adams all vying for targets, Bennett probably won't have outstanding numbers, but he will definitely take some of the pressure off of the other receivers, and open up the game a little more for Aaron Rodgers. This seems like a perfect fit for a pass-catching TE coming to a pass-happy team lacking talent at the TE position.
I'm sure Aaron Rodgers is pleased with this move as well.
