NHL Notes; McDavid To Be Next Oilers Captain, Kris Russell Prediction, Leafs Big Three, NHL's Future

Some notes from topics many are following as the World Cup and training camps start to begin:

-It would be a shock if anyone else other than Connor McDavid is named captain of the Edmonton Oilers. An announcement will most likely come after the World Cup, but expect it to happen.

-Kris Russell is expected to sign soon, but who will be the winner of the Russell sweepstakes? My take is the New Jersey Devils will add him. They have a big need at defense and will need to add salary to the books once Ryan Clowe and Marc Savard are placed on injured reserve.

-The Toronto Maple Leafs "big three" in Auston Matthews, William Nylander, and Mitch Marner could actually lead this team closer to a playoff spot than many think. Of course, everything would have to fall perfectly in place with all three breaking out in their rookie seasons, but don't be surprised as all three look more than ready to take on full-time NHL duty. It should be fun to watch this Leafs team going forward.

-Our NHL's Future series will continue with looks at several more prospects ahead as we take an in-depth look at some of the top prospects who are expected to make huge impacts on their teams' going forward. We've already taken a look at Mitch Marner, Dylan Strome, and Kyle Connor, and there will for sure be many more to come.
