UPDATE ON NFL CONCUSSION SETTLEMENT

First monetary award payments approved; more than 14,500 registrations as August 7 deadline nears

Philadelphia, PA—Co-lead class counsel and the NFL today submitted to the court a joint status report on the implementation of the concussion settlement program, noting that more than 14,500 class members have registered for benefits ahead of the August 7 deadline and the first notices of a monetary award claim determination were issued ($5 million for a qualifying diagnosis of ALS and $4 million for a qualifying diagnosis of CTE, subject to certain holdbacks). The claims process for monetary awards opened on March 23, 2017, and the Baseline Assessment Program launched on June 6, 2017.

The following is a statement from Christopher Seeger, co-lead class counsel for the retired NFL players:

“We continue to be encouraged by the response from retired players and their families to the settlement, and are pleased that its vital benefits – including monetary payments – are now available. We implore all class members – even those who may feel healthy today – to register before the August 7 deadline so they can be eligible for the benefits they deserve.”

All settlement class members must register by August 7, 2017, to be eligible for benefits (such as a baseline assessment or monetary award).

Registration can be completed either online or by mail. Retired NFL players and their representatives can visit to register or download a hard copy of the form. This website also allows eligible class members to sign up for a baseline assessment, submit a claims package for a monetary award, or learn more about the settlement’s benefits. Phone assistance is also available at 1-855-887-3485; average hold times are under one minute, with inquiries answered in under seven minutes on average.
