Keep Kirk in DC!

Captain Kirk
I've been a very harsh critic of Kirk Cousins over the years. I was unfortunately on the RGIII hype train in 2012 until it crashed and burned early in 2013. It took Jay Gruden until the 2015 season(about half of it)to groom Kirk Cousins into a legit starter. At that's just what Cousins is, not a superstar but a legit starter.

In the NFL you don't let legit starters at the quarterback postion walk away. Life without Cousins sounds like a disaster. No guaranteed Superstar quarterback(if that's even a thing) is coming out of the draft. Free agency offers you nothing better than Cousins. Jay Cutler will be a cheaper option but could be more of a problem than problem solver. A trade for rival QB Tony Romo would be a band-aid if Cousins were to walk. Assigning the franchise tag to him for, an unprecedented second year in a row, seems like an easy solution. A long term deal would be harder to work out but would mean both the player and team are on the same page moving forward. If Cousins is to stay in the district than surely expectations would grow.

If Cousins is in another teams jersey by the star of next season skins fans can certainly forget about the playoffs. We could also forget about Gruden keeping his job. Long story short if Kirk leaves it could get ugly fast. With Dallas looking prime for a championship run over the next few years and Carson Wentz at the helm in Philly, Washington could easily end up buried in a very tough division. The Giants kept the Redskins out of the playoffs this year and Eli and company aren't going anywhere. Keeping Kirk in DC is a MUST. I repeat KEEPING KIRK IN DC IS A MUST!

In my mind Cousins is worth what he made on the franchise tag last season. 19.9 million. If the Redskins and Cousins can come to terms on a 4 or 5 year deal at 20-22million that would be ideal for the team. The question is does Cousins view him self as a 25million dollar man. The market says some foolish team (49ers & Browns) will gladly pay Kirk 25million or more for 3+ years. That is a mistake for any team. Cousins isn't the kind of player to carry a team, he needs a strong supporting cast around him. The Redskins could pay him over 25million for a few years but at that price I don't see team improving on defense. That would also mean free agents DeSean Jackson and Pierre Garcon both leaving and that's a major downgrade at the receiver position. A downgrade that will put more on the shoulders of Cousins.

Jordan Reed showing love to his QB
With a long term deal in place, no proven true number one reciver and an undrafted free agent at running back, Kirk Cousins will have the weight of the team on him. Cousins seems to be very well liked in the locker room and by the fans. Star tight end Jordan Reed, when on SiriusXM NFL raido, said of the QB contact situation "I think first off we gotta bring Kirk back".  DC fans are all sick of the lack of talent we've had at QB since I've been alive. 2012's RGIII spectacle only made matters worse and this fan base is thirsty for a legit starter. Kirk Cousins could be the tall glass of water Skins fans have waited years and years for. Even if the water is as overpriced as a beer on game day, most fans are still willing to pay. Just like on game day.
