Interviewing a Coach

For my interview I interviewed the Assistant coach of the Baseball team, Coach Ryan Dana. This will be Ryan’s 2nd season coaching at Dean so he has some experience here and knows what it is like to coach at this school. Ryan is from Bridgewater, Ma as he attended Bridgewater State University and got a degree in Physical Education in 2014. Before working at Dean he was an assistant at the University of Maine-Presque Isle. He also helped recruit there. Ryan’s last 3 summers consisted of being an assistant coach for the Post 387 American Legion baseball team in Kingston, Ma.

I asked him many questions and he cannot wait for the season to get started. One of his biggest ticks is when his players are lazy. He will not tolerate this at all during the season. The players need to do what they are asked. He loves when his players give their best effort and he will not have a problem with you if he sees that you are trying your best. Coach Dana has had many favorite stories from coaching but if had to pick one it would be the very last game of the season last year when Dean got into a brawl with Newbury College. It was funny because their coach instigated the fight and he has never seen anything like that while he was coaching. Especially when the coach basically starts the brawl, this was definitely something unexpected. Some qualities that he has are that he will work harder than anyone else on the field and he cares more about people. Also he will put in as many hours as needed to get the job done and prepare for the season as much as possible. Dean College was picked to finish last in their conference so the expectations are not as high around the league as many teams see that Dean was picked last. Even though expectations around the league are not high, Coach has some high expectations. He expects to win a lot of games. He also expects to make playoffs along with improving as the season goes on. Lastly he said he expects more team chemistry as the chemistry was not that great last season.

There are always challenges going into a long baseball season. I asked coach some of the biggest challenges going into the season and 1st he mentions how experience could be a problem to begin the season. The reason for this is that there are only 4 returning players from last season’s team. With lots of new faces, it could take a little while to figure out the correct lineups and pitching rotation. Coach thinks that the hardest team that Dean will face this year is Trinity College. Trinity only lost 1 player so they have lots of experience going into the new season. Also Eastern Connecticut will be an extremely tough game for us. Coach says that the good news with all of these new freshman is that recruiting will be easier next year since we won’t have to recruit a whole new team like we did this past season. Coach Dana cannot wait for the season to finally get started and he is looking forward to being in a traditional conference with lots of good competition, it will definitely be a fun season.
