Chelsea Vs Arsenal, Starring Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly

It was a big match day last Saturday when current premiership leading side Chelsea took on their long-time London rivals Arsenal.

For weeks, fans of both teams had been looking forward to the game as the deciding factor of two things: whether Chelsea meant business about their title challenge this season, and whether Arsenal had any hopes at all about getting the league title.

As fans flocked to the stadium and took their seats that sunny afternoon at Stamford Bridge, fanfares and painted faces were the order of the day.

Star attendance at the game

When the game began, cameras focused on former Chelsea legends Drogba (now playing for Montreal Impact) and Michael Essien (Panathinaikos) in the stands, along with recently retired Chelsea great Frankie Lampard. Even Andriy Shevchenko was present alongside Chelsea FC club owner Roman Abramovich.

However, that wasn’t everyone in attendance. Visible among other spectators were Hollywood stars Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly.

It’s no longer news that Will Ferrell is a huge Chelsea fan. On several occasions he’s made comments about key decisions at the club, like when Jose Mourinho was dismissed as club coach last year. Ferrell blamed himself for the Portuguese’s sack.

Sherlock and Watson

Both Ferrell and Reilly were in London to shoot Etan Cohen's comedy about the Holmes saga called Holmes and Watson. So it was only natural that Ferrell, who is a big fan of “The Blues”, should attend the game.

“Many US sports fans are quickly becoming UK soccer fans. It helps when big celebrity names show tons of enthusiasm for the sport.

If anything, his presence bolstered Chelsea FC players as they beat Arsenal to clinch an impressive 3 – 1 victory. A result that took the team further up the League table, 9 points clear second placed Tottenham, and a step closer to the Premiership title.

Growing passion for football

Will Ferrell, popular for his role as Ron Burgundy in Anchorman, appears to have a growing passion for the sport as he was previously seen in another match between Liverpool and Swansea earlier this month. He has also recently been named co-owner of the latest Major League Soccer club, Los Angeles FC.

After the match, Ferrell popped into the dressing room to give the blue boys some well-deserved commendation for their performance. Although Pedro was quite undressed, he didn’t mind taking a photo with the Hollywood star. We don’t blame him, as it’s not everyday that you get to meet Ron Burgundy in your dressing room.

Highlights of the game

In addition to registering a victory for The Blues, the match had other high points. Hazard, Chelsea’s forward, recorded the highest number of successful dribbles in major 5 big leagues in Europe. At 101, he is the first player to surpass the 100 mark. Mustafi fell miserably during a dummy initiated by Hazard.

The match also revealed Kante as a major pillar in the Chelsea midfield. The French strong man appeared to be everywhere on the pitch. For some, it’s believed, Leicester gave him away too easily at £30 million.

As Chelsea makes their way higher up the table, we may expect to see Will Ferrell at more games. Ron Burgundy does have a pastime, and it seems to be football.
