Some Week 1 Thoughts

It is foolish to put too much stock into what happened in Week 1, but what occurred isn’t meaningless. Here are some scattered thoughts that I have after the first week of NFL action.

Could Jameis Winston really lose his job? I don’t think he will, but if Ryan Fitzpatrick can replicate his demolition of the Saints over the next two weeks, when Winston is suspended, I do not think sticking with the Harvard graduate is out of the equation in Tampa.

The Bills are absolutely dreadful. To lose by 44 points to a Joe Flacco led team seems almost impossible. I knew it would be a long season in Buffalo, but not to the tune of only one or two wins.

Patrick Mahomes is the best young quarterback in the NFL. Deshaun Watson and Carson Wentz are good don’t get me wrong, but neither possess the arm talent that Mahomes does. Right now, Aaron Rodgers is the best quarterback in football from a talent perspective, but soon that mantle will be passed to the Chiefs dynamic passer.

The Cowboys abandon their running game too easily. It is their bread and butter, yet when Dallas falls behind they forsake the run and ask Dak Prescott to carry the load. It is one thing to ditch the running game when you’re down multiple scores late in the game, but another one entirely to do so when down by a touchdown in the first half as Jason Garrett and the Cowboy’s coaching staff did against the Panthers.

Aaron Rodgers covers up so many flaws for Green Bay. Just having him on the Packers basically guarantees them double-digit wins, regardless of who they surround him with. Rodgers performance on Sunday night was legendary and exemplary of why many view him as the most talented quarterback that has ever lived.
