GAMEDAY: Women's Basketball vs. Kings College Lions: 11/14/18

By Roey Herzfeld

(WASHINGTON HEIGHTS, NY) In last seasons sole meeting, the Yeshiva Maccabees put on a convincing display against the King’s College Lions, thrashing them 59-36. After suffering a hard fought loss earlier this week, Yeshiva (1-1) looks to rebound as they take on the Lions (0-0) in their season opener. The Lions finished last year 4-8 and are looking to build on the success of their younger talent for this upcoming season.

Here are some keys to the game:

  1. The rebounding battle: Despite a losing record, the Lions rebounded extremely effectively last year, specifically on the offensive end where they grabbed almost 23 offensive boards per game. A key battle to watch will be how effectively Yeshiva’s top rebounding leaders- Tehilla Teigman, Michal Alge, and Celia Cohen- limit the threat that the Lions pose. The Lions will be without last years top rebounder Chantel McFarlane (12 rebounds per game).
  2. Ball security: The Maccabees have been for the most part successful in winning the turnover battle this year, as they have turned the ball over just 18 times per game, while opponents are averaging 24.5 giveaways vs the Macs defense. However, the Lions stingy defense averaged close to 14 steals per game last year, making it crucial that the Macs protect the ball. On the defensive end, Yeshiva should look to exploit the Lions tendency to turn the ball over as the Lions averaged more than 22 turnovers per game last year. Look for Yeshiva Senior Forward Michal Alge (averaging 4 steals per game) to play a huge role.
  3. Sophomore Duo: The most pivotal aspect of the matchup could be how the Macs neutralize incoming sophomores Bailey Kaufman and Catie Shomaker. Kaufman led the Lions scoring with 12.5 PPG last year and Shomaker added 8 PPG and 8 rebounds per game. Both players are returning and looking to build on their Freshman seasons.

King’s College will face Yeshiva at ARC Arena Thursday night. Tipoff will be at 8:00 PM. Catch the action live on macslive.com, or LIKE us on Facebook and watch on Facebook live.
