Fair/Unfair?: The Special Draft for Gilas Player

According to the chief of Samahang Basketball ng Pilipinas, the special draft for Gilas 6.0 players is almost a done deal. Until now, we still don't have the complete set of amateur players that will join the team but here are the facts about the special draft that they are planning.

1. They will use the order of the teams via their aggregate standing this season. So, the order will be: 
1 Blackwater
2 Star
3 Phoenix
4 Mahindra
5 GlobalPort
6 NLEX
7 Meralco
8 TNT
9 Rain or Shine
10 Ginebra
11 Alaska
12. San Miguel

2. The draft will be done just like a regular draft.
3. The players will be allowed to play two conferences with their mother team.

That is basically it. 

The biggest decision that they made is to use this year's regular draft order. Which prompted a question in my mind, what makes it different than just letting the boys join the regular draft? This is basically the "round 1" of the 2016, the only difference is, you gave back the traded picks to their teams! Here is the regular draft order.

3 Ginebra (from Phoenix)
4 Mahindra
5 Star (from GlobalPort)
6 San Miguel (from NLEX)
7 Meralco
8 NLEX (from TNT)
9 Rain or Shine

12 Phoenix (from San Miguel)

So, Star, TNT, Globalport and San Miguel benefits from their decision. 

One thing that I can suggest to make it a fairer draft is to use the aggregate standing of the twelve teams in the last two seasons. In that way, That is a better picture of the current standing of each team. Rookie drafts are done for the balancing of the league so using two seasons makes it a more tolerable draft. 

The order will look like this:

6 Star
7 Meralco
8 Ginebra

10 Rain or Shine

12. San Miguel

The thing that made me smile is their decision to let the rookies play two conferences next season. I already expressed that in the past knowing that the 1st FIBA Qualifying will still be on November.

Overall, letting the boys go to the regular draft is still the fairer decision. Almost all of them are already expected to take part of this year's draft so I don't see the point of having a special draft that will only follow the same order. 

How about letting the six most senior of the pool join this year's regular draft and then the other six, next season? No, maybe just let those who are already intending to join this year and then make them sign a contract that will allow them to be pull out from their mother teams when needed.

I am not criticizing the decision, I just want to open up better options that can be considered by the people making the decision. At the least, letting them be drafted is still much better than stopping them from joining the PBA.
