October 19 News and Rumors Recap: Coach Victolero, Coach Chot returns and etc.
Let us dive into another recap of news and rumors around the league!
The Return: Coach Chot Reyes will reclaim his spot as Gilas coach
Director Sonny Barrios said "We want to go back to our winning formula, so to speak. Hindi naman 'yan overnight [decision]. Medyo matagal na usap-usapan 'yan." Coach Tab Baldwin will return to his consultant role. One major announcement that coach said was he wanted the Gilas participants to be in the PBA.
I don't have a problem with either coach Chot or coach Tab. Both coaches are great on what they do. With coach Chot at the helm, I expect Jayson Castro to be back and he is actually the best point guard to lead the patented dribble-drive offense of coach Chot.
One last run: James Yap is confident that he can bounce back
A lot of people, including me, saw the swap between James and Paul Lee as a one-sided deal due to the regression of the game of James. “I know myself. Ganoon naman ang basketball, ‘di laging nasa taas ka. Minsan, mababa din ang laro mo. But I'm still good, I feel good, and ganoon lang ang basketball, pa-kundisyon, bounce back lang. Wag magpabaya.” Yap told the reporters after his first practice with the Rain or Shine franchise.
Sorry James, I will not be fooled. Your time as the Man with a Million Moves is already over. The last four seasons is enough evidence. In the last four seasons, he averaged 12.3 points, 3.8 rebounds, 30.6% 3FG and 37.3% 3FG in 28.8 minutes of play. His counting stats are still good but that efficiency makes him unplayable for me. Nevertheless, he is still the Man with a Thousand Moves and if he can put more time in improving his efficiency in catch and shoot, he will be a good weapon for coach Caloy Garcia.
Manageable: Coach Chito Victolero tackles their excess of guards
After his first practice with the Star, the reporters were eager to know how will he handle their surplus of guards. “The good thing here is I have a lot of very good guards, so magandang problema... May problema kung paano mo makukuha sa kanila yung best nila dun sa time na ibibigay mo sa kanila, at the same time, yung talent nila ma-maximize mo."
Maybe he really means it but your surplus of guards is more bad than good coach. Why? PJ Simon, RR Garcia, Alex Mallari and Paul Lee all needs the ball to maximize their talent. Mark Barroca and Justin Melton will provide you plus defense but you cannot expect that from the other four.
So, without Barroca and Melton in the court, the backcourt will always be a weakness on the defensive end. In short, to fully maximize the backcourt, one of Barroca and Melton should always be on the court which means Lee, Simon, Garcia and Mallari will need to battle for the other 48 minutes.
But maybe, coach Chito can really juice out defense from Lee, Simon, Garcia and Mallari. If he can do that, the surplus will be a weapon.
Bigman search: Coach Franz wants Moala Tautuaa?
Factuality Meter - 35%
One recent chattering that I heard was the search of coach Franz for a legit big that can handle himself against a June Mar Fajardo. And one of their biggest target, according to the source, was Moala Tautuaa. And the biggest thing about it was, they are willing to exchange Terrence Romeo!
I am not totally buying it. I really believe that almost all the teams wants a player who can handle himself against the giants. But, Terrence Romeo is Terrence Romeo. I don't think they want to let him go but I do believe that they are structuring an offer for Moala Tautuaa.
