Ok we all know NFL is the most popular sport in the country. However, if we look at different aspects of popularity we can see mixed results.

First, let’s find out which one is more brutal and which sport delivers more punishment to the players. As per the football buffs, NFL players are usually bigger in size and become injured on virtually every single play. On the other hand, the hockey fans likewise argue that the NHL players are traveling at tremendous speed on ice while slamming into one another and one cannot rule out the fact that a flying puck can hit an unprotected area of the body causing fatal injuries in the long run.

As per the recent studies, it has been found that NFL players suffered as many as 271 concussions while practicing and also participating in preseason plus regular games in the year 2015. On the contrary, the NHL players suffered approximately 70 concussions each year between 1997 and 2004.

Thus it can be argued that both the NFL as well as the NHL is similarly brutal although they differ significantly in many ways particularly at the advanced level. For example, while there are 32 teams in the NFL each consisting of 53 players, there are 31 teams in the NHL with up to 20 players plus a couple of goalkeepers every side. Moreover, the NFL players collide into one another intentionally while their counterparts make their best efforts to utilize their body checks sensibly. Furthermore, while the NHL teams play as many as 82 games in a particular season, the NFL teams play only 16. And, the list of differences is unending.

Next, let’s assess which one is more global. In case one argues that the NFL is as global as the NHL, he is not correct. In fact, the NFL does not appeal to the international audience as much as the NHL at present.

When it comes to salaries, the NFL can hope to make as much as $365,000 on an average per annum which is actually rising by around $10,000 every single year. There are several avenues in which the rookies are able to generate big money including a signing bonus, a roster bonus, as well as contact incentives. On the other hand, an NFL player will be able to generate around $1.9 million every year while the average salary of a quarterback is around $4 million per annum. A typical NHL player will generate approximately $2.4 million as compared to their NFL counterparts. Thus it is apparent that the NFL players do not end up earning as much as the NHL players.

Lastly, we will talk about the attendance. Interestingly, it has been found that a total of 17,253,425 individuals attended the NFL games while as many as 22,174,263 went to see NHL matches. Thus it is evident that the NHL succeeded in attracting approximately 5,000,000 individuals more than the NFL. However, we should not forget the fact that the NFL plays only 16 games in a particular season while the NHL plays as many as 82. If we try to look a bit closer, we will find that 17,446 people attended the NFL games on an average while an average of 67,396 fans went to the NFL games to shout for their sides. Obviously, it would be much better to add some more games to the NFL, but considering the brutal nature of the game, the restriction is still implemented.

NFL versus NHL: Summary

It is not really prudent to compare between the NHL and the NFL in terms of attendance and generation of revenues. The fact is that the NFL is a clear winner in both the cases . However, while the salary of the hockey players is much higher, one must not forget the fact that they are required to play many more games as compared to the NFL players. While a hockey fan will not hesitate to shell out some extra cash to see their favorite team in action, the NFL fans are going to completely outnumber them. However, with the emergence of new NHL franchises in various parts of the country, the weather is no longer an impediment for any NHL game particularly in Texas and the southern parts of Florida. In a nutshell, it is for sure that football definitely rules over hockey; however, with the superior efforts of the NHL authorities to branch out the game globally, nobody knows whether its popularity would transform in the course of time. Either way, both the NFL as well as the NHL is extremely fast and brutal and the fans of both these sporting events are convinced about the fact that they have gone for the better of the two games.
