Can we see Them Shine?
There are some players in the NBA who were simply drafted by the wrong teams. Us as NBA fans haven’t had the ability to see these players reach their full potential. It's multiple aspects that come with a player being successful. Coaching, teammates the atmosphere and the players mentality itself. There are a few players who were drafted by the right team. Some guys have been in ideal situations for them to grow into their own and be successful NBA players. The San Antonio Spurs drafted a guy like Kawhi Leonard in a perfect spot. The Indiana Pacers made a great choice with Paul George. But some stars have not been so lucky.
The New Orleans Pelicans are terrible. They don’t seem to have a plan. Since losing Chris Paul in free agency it seems like the Pelicans have been lost. Anthony Davis hasn’t played with a good point guard just yet. The ones they have brought to town just haven’t been consistent enough to help Anthony Davis be effective.
Coming out of Kentucky Anthony Davis was very hyped. In the first few years of his career, he has improved his midrange game drastically. For his first few seasons Davis could only be a rim runner. Catching the ball close to the basket was the only way he could be effective. Now, Davis brings big men away from the rim and exposes their defensive inabilities. He’s averaging 31.3 points, 10.8 rebounds and 3 blocks a game. His defensive powers can never be questioned. Davis is one of the best big men in the league.
Anthony Davis could significantly help another team. He’s proven to be a great player. In the correct system, his talents would definitely flourish. Davis signed a 5-year extension on July 9, 2015. The Pelicans understood what they had and decided to lock him down. The only way for Anthony Davis to get out of New Orleans is for their front office to be duped in a trade. For now, it looks like we’ll have to keep watching Davis literally carry a team on his back.
The Sacramento Kings franchise is a dumpster fire. They could probably be considered one of the worst organizations in American sports. Well, that may be a little exaggeration but this team is bad. Owner VIvek Ranadive isn’t a basketball mind. This guy once said that the team should play 4 on 5 and allows one of their players to stay down on the offensive end. One good thing he did was hiring Vlade Divac to be their general manager. But even that move hasn’t panned out. Now the team has a hoard of average big men.
Boogie Cousins was another Kentucky prospect. Coming out of college he was highly touted. Individually he has lived up to expectations. This season he’s averaging 26.6 points and 8.6 rebounds per game. But Boogie’s issue isn’t his scoring ability. His problem is his attitude. Cousins was drafted to the wrong team because he never had a mentor. He needed a guy like Kevin Garnett to help mold him into a better player and person. Sacramento was honestly the worst place for him.
Boogie has the talent to lead the team and be a superstar. That’s the role he has in Sacramento. But with his attitude, he could be considered a cancer. He can’t seem to get along with any coach, has issues with teammates and racks up a ridiculous amount of technical fouls each season. It’s difficult to say if DeMarcus Cousins could aid a contender in being successful. He’s been in the league so long, it’s hard to think that he would change. He’s sort of who he is going to be at this point. He would have to be in an almost perfect situation for him to be successful. DeMarcus Cousins might be remembered as a 7 foot crybaby that never made the playoffs.
The New York Knicks worked some magic in 2011 to acquire Carmelo Anthony. At the time, he was one of the top players in the league and had some playoff experience. He had just carried the Denver Nuggets to the conference finals. Carmelo might be one of last players to sign with a team because of the large market they’re in. But the New York Knicks still don’t have a direction. This team almost seems cursed.
This summer the New York Knicks continued to sell fans a dream. I stated that they have a high ceiling but an even lower floor. After agreeing to have Phil Jackson not as a coach but controlling almost every other aspect of the team, the Knicks seem to have gotten worse. They added multiple players that are past their prime, including Derrick Rose and Joakim Noah. Carmelo Anthony actually fits in that category. He’s clearly deteriorating. Carmelo is averaging 22.4 points 5.7 rebounds and 2.7 assists. Over the summer he did lead the United States to another gold medal but that play hasn’t transferred into the NBA regular season. He’s shooting 30% from 3. As a team they're shooting terribly and Phil Jackson is still trying to force feed everyone the triangle offense. The Knicks will once again be at the bottom of the conference.
This is probably the most painful player to watch. Carmelo should be in the same conversation with Dwayne Wade and Lebron James. Instead he’s lying to himself saying that Olympic gold medals are just as good as NBA championships. Melo might have missed his only opportunity to be a winner when he passed on the Chicago Bulls for the New York Knicks. I think we can all agree that Carmelo Anthony may go down as another hall of famer that will retire without an NBA championship.
