Former Jets DE Dennis Byrd killed in automobile accident

Byrd's number 90 was retired by the jets in 2012

Former New York Jets DE Dennis Byrd was killed Saturday evening in a head on collision in Claremore, Oklahoma he was 50 years old.

Byrd was hit head on by a 17-year old driver after he crossed the center line, Byrd was pronounced dead on the scene. His 12-year old passenger has been hospitalized.

Dennis Byrd was know for recovering from a spinal injury that nearly left him paralyzed, but he battled back to recover and learn to walk again, after retirement he became one of the most inspirational speakers to youth groups and kids with disabilities.

Byrd was a second round pick of the New York Jets in 1989, played 4 seasons and in 2012 the Jets retired his #90 jersey. He also has an award named after him for being the teams most inspirational speaker.

Byrd loved coaching youth sports and said in an interview, “I really have loved coaching football and working with kids, talking about the lessons I’ve learned as an athlete and the journey as someone with a disability,”
