How Fisher and the Rams can help Todd Gurley turn things around in L.A.
Los Angeles Rams running back Todd Gurley has seen some tough times early in the 2016 season far from his amazing rookie season and his yards are getting harder to come by as defensive coordinators seem to have figured out how to stop him or have they? Gurley is averaging only 2.6 yards a carry with 216 yards on the ground through 4 games, but you have to look deeper into just the stats and see what's really going on.
The Rams came into the season with issues at QB and still haven't seen a drastic change at the position as Kase Keenum has taken over starting duties over #1 overall pick Jared Goff has yet to see a snap in the regular season. This is causing the Rams to have to depend on Gurley to carry a much heavier load than he should as a running back.
They also have struggled at another offensive position and that's wide receiver because they have no real go-to-guy or #1 receiver that can take over a game. Gurley will probably get more touches in the passing game to help them there too. They gave Tavon Austin $40 million this past off-season but do you see him taking pressure off of Gurley and the Rams offense? It's an open and shut case there.
Los Angeles also has to put an effective offensive line in front of Gurley for him to have a chance to become the game-changing back they drafted him to be last season. If the O-Line can't pass protect or run block this is putting more pressure on Gurley with 8 in the box and run blitzes which target him making it impossible to find a running lane, so Todd is not totally to blame for his early troubles on the ground.
If they are to turn things around Fisher and the Rams have to get these problems fixed. Gurley can be a workhouse back but Los Angeles has to have help the proper offensive tools in place, so can they do that we shall see. In the meanwhile get the L.A. fans to take a chill pill.
