Cam Newton and Michael Jordan attacked online for lame responses to Charlotte riots.
Some of these tweets are hilarious. Let's start with Cam Newton. "We as blacks have to do right by ourselves. We can't be hypocrites." I agree with that wholeheartedly. I also understand the black community's level of annoyance with the flip flopping Carolina quarterback. First he's a black quarterback and that scares people then racism doesn't exist and now he's troubled by the injustices he sees in his community. Maybe Cam should just play the background. I have talked about how he doesn't seem to be the sharpest tool in the shed and how his command of the English language leave a lot to be desired. Everything ain't for everybody and obviously being a spokesperson for the black community isn't for Cam. No shame in that. Black athletes need to be more creative. For instance, Cam can have a contest where he sponsors the top five black small business proposals in Charlotte. African-Americans can submit their business plans to a review board and the best, most professional ones get the funding. How ever much that may be. Cam could use his influence to link black contractors with property developers. He and other athletes don't have to give black money, they can merely help us get into position to get our own. Cam could start a cash for grades or reward kids for attendance. Anything.
As for Michael Jordan, I am not sure if he can even process the idea of oppression or racism. He's Michael freaking Jordan. Mike should say something profoundly in support of the African-American community. He's older, wiser and more articulate than Cam. There is nothing he can do to scare away sponsors or damage his brand. If Michael Jordan stripped naked and ran through the streets of Charlotte screaming "Kill whitey", he wouldn't lose his Jordan shoe contract. He owns the damn company. Would white people say "Now that Jordan spoke out against extrajudicial killings of unarmed black men, Kobe's the greatest player ever?? He's always gonna be the GOAT. Could you imagine Hanes dropping Michael Jordan? The last thing we need is for Jordan to do is donate money because he plays both sides. If he gives a million dollars to #BlackLivesMatter he will probably feel the need to donate a million to the KKK just to stay on the fence. One day Michael Jordan is gonna be on his death bed and it is going to hit him that he became the richest and most iconic athlete ever and his people are no better off than they were when he was drafted by the Bulls in 1984. So in the end Cam need to use his dollars and platform and Jordan needs to use his voice. Share and get in the comment box and let me know what you think.
