Atalanta vs. Roma Preview & Prediction

Atalanta will hope to continue their impressive streak as they host an injury-plagued Roma this Sunday afternoon.

Considering that La Dea had finished in 13th spot in the last campaign, and barely avoided regulation before that, no one could have expected them to do well. In fact, the team, now under the guidance of Gian Piero Gasperini, had started this season quite badly. They lost four out of their first five contest, including an upset home defeat to relegation side Palermo.

However, they showed great motivation to defeat to a side in making their Serie A debut in Crotone by a 3-1 score. Since then, they have been on a hot streak. Coming into this game, Atalanta is now on a four-game winning streak. They have 19 points, in which is the best run of any side currently competing in the Serie A. Youth players like Franck Kessie and Andrea Petagna have come into their own and have played a significant role in Atalanta's success during this hot streak.

They currently sit just four points behind second place, in which Roma holds that spot. The Giallorossi themselves have been quite stable this season, but Luciano Spalletti will be dealing with some major injury concerns, especially on the defensive side of the ball, so despite Roma having a high-scoring squad, they have had problems keeping clean sheets. And they were quite inconsistent in their last game on the road, where they failed to score a goal against Empoli.

However, Roma does have some strong options in their attack game. Edin Dzeko has been great in his second season with the Lupi. Spalletti hopes that Dzeko, who has scored ten goals this season, will continue that same form as they look to gain three points against an Atalanta side that is growing in confidence.

Prediction: Atalanta has only won one game against Roma in their last eight matchups. However, they are considered a favorite here. Roma’s injury concerns could be an X-factor in this game, especially considering La Dea’s home and overall record. Still, the Giallorossi have a strong attacking game, which will put Atalanta’s clean sheet streak in jeopardy. All in all, Gasperini’s squad should be able to cause Roma some problems, but I have this game finishing in a draw.
