In fact, it has been used as a treatment for epilepsy since the 1920s and came back into the spotlight in the 1990s when Dateline focused on a lighted section as an option for treatment. But how did you move from epilepsy to weight loss? Well, for starters, an increasing number of celebrities - including Vanessa Hudgens and Halle Berry - have recently praised the results of weight loss in public.

So what is ketone diet? It is a high-fat, low-carbohydrate diet that sends your body into a state of ketosis, where stored fat is used as energy. When you eat this way - usually we talk less than 50 grams of carbohydrates a day - "you will consume a huge amount of fat," says Shahzadi Devji, RD, CDE, nutritionist in Toronto, Canada. In fact, through a quito diet, about 60 to 80 percent of your daily calories will come from fat.

When you restrict carbohydrates in this way and eat more fat, the body takes about 24 to 48 hours to start producing ketones, which are created when the body metabolizes fat for energy, says Pegah Jalali, MS, RD, clinical coordinator in New York Epilepsy Center Comprehensive for the University, where patients are consulted on ketone diet. Normally, your body metabolizes carbohydrates as a primary source of energy.

When most people hear "diet" they think calories, but on a quito diet the specific calories are not the focus. "Mostly, I encourage my patients to eat according to their wishes," says Jalali. "Your body can be in the state of ketone generation at a range of calorie levels, and individual needs fluctuate day by day depending on activity and other factors." But you do not want to add a latte to your morning routine or even an extra part, Jalali says: "From fruit to snack in the afternoon, if those meals are not in your meal plan." What is the day you are looking for in a diet?

As an example of what a day might look like in the life of a ketone diet, here is a sample meal plan that Jalali shares with her patients.

breakfast

• Two eggs cooked in a tablespoon of butter or ghee

• cup of cooked spinach, in 1 tablespoon of coconut oil

• 1 cup coffee, mixed with a tablespoon of butter and a teaspoon of cinnamon

A snack in the middle of the morning

• 6 macadamia nuts

• 6 berries

lunch

• Tuna salad (4-5 ounces canned light tuna, mixed with 2 tablespoons of mayonnaise, 1 cup of chopped celery, 1 cup of chopped green apples, salt and black pepper to taste) and served more than 1 cup of romaine lettuce

• Salad cup steamed green beans and 8-10 olives), topped with a mixture of a tablespoon of olive oil, lemon and juice.

Afternoon snack

• avocado, sprinkled with 1 tablespoon of hemp seeds or 1 teaspoon of dietary yeast

Dinner

• 8-12 ounces of cooked steaks, in 1 tablespoon of butter

• 1 cup broccoli, grilled in 1 tablespoon of hazelnut oil

Candy

• 1 oz 90% dark chocolate

• 1 tablespoon salted almond butter, sprinkled with a piece of cinnamon

THE PROS OF THE KETO DIET

The main benefit of diet, and why many of its followers praise the eating plan, is weight loss. Multiple studies show promising results: In a study by the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, obese men dropped by about 14 pounds after dieting for a month. In a long-term study published in the Department of Clinical Heart Disease, obese adults who have been adhering to a ketone diet for about six months have observed a significant loss of weight - on average, 32 pounds - as well as a decrease in total cholesterol and an increase in good cholesterol Hamid. A review study in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that weight loss observed during the first three or six months of the Quito diet was greater than the loss of a regular diet.

Often weight loss occurs on a quito diet because your body uses fat stock for energy - you may also notice an appetite drop that is mostly produced by the diet. "We do not know exactly why it's so good," says Jalali. "But my theory is that ketosis is the state in which we live during hunger and fasting for long periods, so it may be an evolutionary response to help people adapt." In addition, the body will absorb fat more slowly than carbohydrates. "Fat has a longer time in the intestine compared to carbohydrates," she says. "So it will prolong this feeling of satiety, especially between meals."
