2016 PBA Draft: How did Roger Pogoy end up in TNT?

Congratulations TNT... you just won the 2016 PBA Draft.

And here’s why!

So TNT KaTropa came to the 2016 PBA Draft with zero picks in the first and second round. But then, they are required to own a Gilas Pilipinas player. If you check out how the players were acquired, it pretty much follows the 2016 PBA Draft order. Blackwater picks first then Phoenix follows because of an earlier trade that involved Star and then Ginebra follows because of an earlier transaction involving the Fuel Masters.

All in all, TNT was supposed to pick last in the round.

So how did they get Roger Pogoy?

Pogoy is a marked man in the draft. He may not be Top 6 material but he’s certainly not the last choice amongst the twelve players. Through wheeling and dealing TNT were able to obtain his rights which fits in Nash Racela’s scheme. The former Batangas Blades mentor was named TNT head coach after Jong Uichico’s inability to capitalize on a 10-1 Governors’ Cup elimination round win-loss record.

But how exactly did they get Pogoy?

If you look at all the online reports that were available in the days leading to the draft, Pogoy was headed to Meralco, Ed Daquioag is going to NLEX, and Fonso Gotladera is the TNT pick. Gotladera is the most logical choice as the twelfth man since he was a last minute add (since Almond Vosotros has already been drafted).

So does this mean the draft got even fishier?

If you check out the Wiki page of the 2016 PBA Draft, their caption reads “special draft”. The Gilas Pilipinas picks were also presented in alphabetical order so it’s easy to manipulate the picks without stirring the pot. Without a pronounced rule, teams are free to claim the players they want. And this is puzzling because if they virtually used the draft order of the regular draft, then they could have just adjusted the rest of the regular draft so that order will benefit the weak squads.

But then, what’s with the article that allegedly had the league prohibit Ginebra and Star to swap picks? Was the Kevin Ferrer for Jio Jalalon alleged deal a smokescreen for this escape act?

The TNT KaTropa had already won the draft when they acquired Pogoy despite the lack of first and second round picks. After Pogoy, their next pick was at 22 or 36 if you combine the regular draftees from the special ones. TNT got Tim Habelito in the fourth round, Mikee Reyes in the fifth, and they closed out the draft by selecting former PCBL MVP Levi Hernandez.

The shady mechanics of the special draft just left the basketball fans in awe on how an established organization can just manipulate their system.
