Bucs come to terms with Cameron Brate and Brent Grimes
The Buccaneers made two moves today that I had been hoping they would make all along. The first order of business was signing TE Cameron Brate to a 6/yr 41 million dollar contract. Brate is one of the most underrated TE’s in the league and all he has done is produce on the field. He is second to Jimmy Graham in TD receptions over the last two seasons with 14. $18 million is guaranteed making Brate the second highest paid TE in the league.
The Harvard educated Brate has done nothing but work hard and do whartever he has been asked to do by the Bucs. Brate is one of Winston’s favorite targets in the red zone since being promoted from the practice squad for good in 2015.
The Bucs also announced that they have come to terms with CB Brent Grimes on a 1/yr 10 million dollar contract. The 35 year old Grimes has been the best DB on the team over the last couple of seasons with seven picks and 35 passes defended. Grimes has continued to play at a high level during his time in Tampa and has been very durable missing only three games the last two seasons to injury.
The Bucs may also bring back CB Robert McClain for another season. McClain had three picks last year and was very versatile as he was able to play both outside and in the nickel package.
Adam Humphries has been given a second round tender of $615,000. What this means is that if Humphries does not re-sign with the Bucs, he is free to sign with any team and the Bucs would get a second round pick should the team decide not to match the offer. I have a feeling Humphries will end up with a substantial raise either way. Humphries was second on the team with 61 catches last season for 631 yards and a touchdown.
LB Adarius Glanton signed a one year contract today. Glanton will get paid just over 790,000 next season. Glanton saw some action on special teams last year and filled in at LB with the injuries to Kwon Alexander and Lavonte David.
The free agent signing period is just over 24 hours away. I will be excited to see what Jason Licht does to fix the problems on the DL. Ndamukong Suh will be cut by Miami. Could he end up In Tampa and play next to Gerald McCoy? We are about to find out.
