Matthews Scores Two In Leafs Opener

After John Tavares was named team captain, it was time for the Toronto Maple Leafs to kick off the 2019/20 season at Scotiabank Arena.

Last night, the Leafs defeated their provincial rivals, the Ottawa Senators, 5-3.

Ottawa struck first, though, with a goal by Brady Tkachuk 25 seconds into the game.

Frederik Gauthier tied the game 2:20 into the second period.

Trevor Moore put the Leafs ahead 2-1 at 4:42.

Scott Sabourin tied the game at 5:51.

Then, Auston Matthews scored back-to-back goals at 8:02 and 14:50 to put the Leafs ahead 4-2.

Ilya Mikheyev added another goal for Toronto at 9:43 of the third period.

Bobby Ryan scored Ottawa's third goal at 17:45.

Toronto's Tyson Barrie had two assists.

Senator's goalie, Craig Anderson stopped 42 shots last night.

Toronto heads off to Columbus to face the Blue Jackets tomorrow night.
