Girls making their mark on footy in the Derwent Valley
As women’s football in Tasmania grows the future stars of New Norfolk District Junior Football Club have begun their journey at Boyer Oval. New Norfolk are also looking to field a side in the inaugural Southern Football League Women’s league season.
2017 New Norfolk Youth Girls ready to kick off a big season of Youth Girls football in the Derwent Valley.
The SFLW Lightning Carnival that ran on Saturday March 4th was dubbed a “Come and Try” event which saw four clubs able to field sides. New Norfolk unfortunately unable to field a side as they were still searching for players.
The future for the club is a bright one at Youth Girls level, with many girls turning for the club to begin learning the skills of the game. Last year the STJFL kicked off the Youth Girls leagues on the back of the success of the Women’s Exhibition Games between the Western Bulldogs and Melbourne.

From there women’s football has begun to grow including a growth in Tasmania, with come and try events around the state well participated in. The STJFL Youth Girls Development Series last season saw some great skills on show from girls finally able to get a kick in their own league.
As the women’s game gains popularity the AFL had begun its own league and now the SFL has theirs with currently the five clubs Claremont, Cygnet, South East Suns, Hobart City and also New Norfolk.
New Norfolk is looking to join in on the growth of women’s football, and also join the STJFL Youth Girls as well with so many already on the training track for the club there is always a call for more. Coach Dean King put the girls through their paces, and have them already learning the basics.
New Norfolj's youth girls side has gone from 15 to 30 girls, and looking ready to compete in the STJFL Youth Girls in 2017. A league already in it's infancy.
The Valley of Love is ready to show the love for the game in the girls grades, and also at senior women’s level, but they need players. Players are encouraged to get along to training on a Wednesday Night at Boyer Oval.
The Youth girls begin their training under coach Dean King at 5pm, and then the women’s team begins at 6pm with Brook Sutton leading the charge and the person to contact to begin a football career with the New Norfolk ladies side.
The Norfolk District Football Club are very welcoming, friendly bunch that are welcoming anyone to come and have a try. If you enjoy your time amongst the ladies, and the youth girls you can stick around and pull on a jumper.
All levels have a different range of skills, and are always welcoming, and you are able to learn some great skills play in a friendly community league that is always very competitive.
Now girls and women alike can live their dream of playing in the AFL, as the AFLW will certainly grow over time and already we have seen six Tasmanian’s from the Tasmanian Women’s League given their AFLW dream in the last draft.
