After more than 13 years at the helm of Georgetown Basketball, John Thompson III has been relieved of his duties as coach of the Hoyas.

During his time in the capital, Thompson went 264-133 going into this season, and the Hoyas finished 14-18 (5-13 Big East) in 2016-17.

Also, in three of the past four season, Georgetown did not get selected to dance in the NCAA tournament.

"It is with profound regret and deep appreciation that I informed John Thompson III this morning that the university will no longer be retaining his services as our head men's basketball coach," university president John J. DeGioia said in a statement.

Thompson III is the son of former Georgetown great John Thompson Jr. who led the Hoyas to their only championship in 1984 as head coach.

Thompson III failed to live up to hefty expectations, only making it to the final four once but failing to make it out of the first or second round in their next six tournament appearances.
