Reds Win 5-3 In Final Game Of Homestand

In their final game of a nine-game homestand, the Cincinnati Reds managed to hold off the New York Yankees to win the last contest of a two-game series 5-3 and are now 18-15 for the 2017 season.

The Reds fell behind early 2-0 thanks in parts to two Yankees solo home runs, Gary Sanchez in the first inning and Didi Gregorius in the second, but used a five-run bottom of the second to take the lead and didn’t look back from there as that proved to be all they needed to win the game. Cincinnati loaded the bases and Billy Hamilton capitalized on the opportunity with two-run single, extending his hit streak to seven games, to tie the game at 2-2.

Two batters later, Joey Votto continued his torrid hitting with a two-run single to give the Reds the lead at 4-2 and it proved to be the game winning hit. Adam Duvall added some cushion to their lead as he hit an RBI single to extend the lead to 5-2.

The Bronx Bombers would cut the deficit to 5-3 on an RBI single from Gregorius in the fourth inning, but Cincinnati’s pitching helped keep the Yankees offense at bay for the rest of the night.

Reds starter Tim Adleman pitched effectively in his start as he went five innings allowing three runs on five hits while striking out six and walking two earning him the win and moved to 2-1 on the season. Yankees hurler, C.C. Sabathia, had a rough second inning, but overall did not pitch all that badly, but he suffered the loss as he went six innings, allowing five runs on seven hits while striking out two and walking two as he fell to 2-2. Raisel Iglesias picked up his six save of the season.

Cincinnati has the off day on Wednesday, but they will be getting ready for a seven game road trip as they will take on the San Francisco Giants for four games and the Chicago Cubs for three. On Thursday, the Reds will send veteran Bronson Arroyo (3-2, 6.53) to the mound as the Giants have yet to announce their starter.

Player of the game: Tim Adleman receives the nod here as he put up a solid performance and helped keep the Yankees off the board despite digging himself into an early 2-0 deficit. Plus the six strikeouts helped his case.

MVP of the series: First recipient of the MVP of a series award, and in this particular case against the Yankees, Joey Votto wins as his five RBIs on four hits (one home run) helped him stand out. He also drove in 12 RBIs in the nine game homestand.
