Why Tony Romo Gained my Utmost Respect Today

Let me start this by saying that I never have been, and never will be, a Dallas Cowboys fan. I grew up with a father that cheered for the Minnesota Vikings first, and anyone else playing the Dallas Cowboys second. I always looked forward to Thanksgiving, not because of turkey and stuffing, but because I knew my dad would sit down with me and together we would be able to cheer against the Cowboys. But today, I became a Tony Romo fan – let me explain why. In high school, I played football all four years. My freshman year was my first year of organized football, and I wasn't great, but wasn't horrible either. But after our first game I contracted Lymes disease, and wasn't allowed to play the rest of the year. Long story short, I'll never be the bitter old man saying I would have been drafted if I didn't get sick, but I do think that I could have been a decent high school player that would have seen some time. Seeing younger players play in front of me, especially my senior year, definitely hurt. As a football player, even a bad one such as myself, you have to have a bit of an ego and the belief you can do it, you are better than the man across from you. It’s not arrogance, and it's not a false belief, but to play the game of football, you must have that drive inside you. My point is, to have the success and to put up the stats that he has, Tony Romo has to be a very confident man. So for him to come out tonight and say that Dak Prescott deserves to be the starting quarterback really struck me. The team is 8-1, but with Romo getting healthy, wondering who the starting quarterback would be was becoming a weekly distraction. Even if Romo was told by the coaches he wasn't going to start, he was not required to come out and support Dak. He could have sat back and had the media report he was upset and wanted to start. Instead, he came out and supported Dak as the starter for the rest of the year. Tony Romo's support and guidance for the rest of the season will do nothing but good for Dak for the remainder of a season in which the Cowboys look to be a legitimate Super Bowl contender. Now don’t get me wrong, I hope they get their hearts broken by someone in the playoffs, but I wish Tony Romo all the success in the world from this point forward.
