OMG Eireann and her Cliff teammates get a crack at Iowa State

Former Todd County Falcon, Eireann Grimshaw and her Briar Cliff teammates get a crack at Iowa State in an exhibition game on Sunday.

By Rich Winter

Years and years ago, happened across a back-yard pickup game at the home of Kernit Grimshaw here in Mission. Seems like I pulled up during the warm-up portion of things and Eireann Grimshaw's older brother, Max, and good friend, Charles Metcalf were trying out hook-shots, driving the lane with some dipsy-doo, NBA type stuff. While all of this was going on, Max's younger sister, Eireann was working on her mid-range game, banking shots off the glass/wood, grabbing the imaginary rebound, on occasion, and pump-faking the imaginary defender, only she saw in the yard.

Well, as boys will be boys, Max and Charles challenged the old guy and the little girl, probably a 6th or 7th grader. All I remember was getting to Eireann on the wing, getting out of the way and letting her go to work.

No contest, Grimshaw and Winter (mostly Grimshaw) earned the TKO!

I knew then, just from watching the warm-up that Grimshaw had something special about her game, a game that has translated to playing ball at Briar Cliff University.

Well, as I'm scrolling around Facebook this morning, I notice, Eireann's dad posting a picture and talking about Briar Cliff having some games this weekend. Grimshaw and her Briar Cliff teammates are about to start their season with a wicked weekend.

Tonight it's #16 Olivet Nazarene University and Saturday it's No. 6, Saint Xavier University

And then, on Sunday, the Briar Cliff girls get a shot at Iowa State, albeit in an exhibition game.

That's freaking AWESOME!

How many of can say we know someone that's lacing it up for ranked games and then a shot at a Division 1 Program? Good luck ladies, give em heck....

On a personal note, I worked pretty hard to learn how to spell the name, Eireann and despite every journalist on the planet misspelling that name and the program saying Erin, I'll always spell it from the heart!

Good luck this season, we'll be watching!
