Wiley Heath is one tough Cowboy
By Rich Winter
It's kinda easy to miss Colome senior Wiley Heath out on the football field. The man is just 5-6 and weighs a buck-fifty, and while he won't scare ya coming off the bus, the kid just shows up in the box score, time and time again.
During a stellar career at Colome that was capped off with winning the 9B state football championship, Heath accounted for 202 tackles, 92 in his senior season. For his efforts, Heath made the all-state football team as a LB.
From the Mitchell Daily Republic: Linebacker — Wiley Heath, Colome: Standing at 5-foot-6, 155 pounds, Heath brought the heart for the Cowboys' defense. He had 92 tackles for the season and recorded 201 tackles for his career, along with 3.5 sacks. Coach Dale Krumpus said Heath's top traits included putting himself in the right position to make the play.
That's awesome stuff for a tuff guy that likely had some sand kicked in his face, especially his freshman year, but Heath had the last laugh, earning a prestigious honor that no one will be able to take from him.
Great stuff from Colome this season as two other players made the all-state football team....
Guard — Matt Campbell, Colome: The defending Class B state champion in the shot put, Campbell helped paved the Cowboys to the state championship in Class 9B. The 6-foot-2, 220-pound lineman, who previously played for Gregory, was all-Great Plains Conference selection and a "good, hard-nosed football player," for coach Dale Krumpus. He was named the most outstanding lineman in the Class 9B championship game.
Receiver — Kelly O'Bryan, Colome: O'Bryan was an all-around asset for the Cowboys, catching 31 passes for 525 yards and eight touchdowns and racked up 1,280 yards total yards of offense. For his career, the 6-foot senior and two-time all-Great Plains Conference pick he had more than 60 catches, 1,045 yards and 15 touchdowns. He was the Class 9B championship game's most outstanding back, as well.
Caught some rumblings of a pretty good basketball team over there in Colome last season...Panic Button to-do list, go to a game in Colome this season...It's on!
